It's been a good day, even better now with one of my favorite Haydn pieces (No. 86) with Fey's dynamite performance.
(nice jean-jacket, Thomas)

Interesting.  I just got the same disc on Saturday, and find 87 excellent and 69 about as good as that thing is likely to warrant, but 86 - well, I had hoped for better.  Too skittery, bouncy, erratic, bubbly for my taste; this is a LYRICAL symphony until the finale takes over in its headlong rush, and I don't find that sense from Fey and his in-and-out, on-and-off effects.  (Finale's pretty good though.)

The trouble is that I still don't have a really fine alternative; bottom line for me is that this is one of the truly great Haydn symphonies, and the only one I can think of that hasn't yet been done to my taste.  I'll just bet that says a lot more about my taste than about Haydn recordings, eh?  Still, when my performance of choice remains to this day Bruno Walter, 1938 (!!), something's amiss somewhere.

I don't know the Quartetto Italiano's Mozart - but I do enjoy their Beethoven quartets.

Speaking of Mozart string quartets:
W.A. Mozart
String quartet in E-flat major, K 160

Delightful!

Coincidence - I was playing the same set earlier today. Had the same thought (I think) but different imagery. Whilst I prefer later SQs these are performed very well.

CD II of this set which I have praised profusely, and recommend without hesitation. However listen first to the samples, I would not have you buy something you might regret later. The recording sounds excellent, and the Harpsichord used (copy of Ruckers 1638) is up to expectations.

Aria "More Palatino in C .
Suites in G minor, C Bux 228 & 229, A minor, A, D minor.
Praeludium in G minor.

This one is a double, Volume 8 of the trios for Fortepiano, Violin, and Cello. Again they decided to use the Harpsichord again, and I came to the conclusion that this instrument works better for me as the Fortepiano. The works get more flesh on their bones, however unlikely that seems to be, considering the dynamic differences between instruments. But I simply am more focused this way, and my mind is not wandering off, despite the high quality of the performance and music. The Harpsichord is attention grabbing in its own sweet way.

CD 1 Trio in G major, F major, C major. Hoboken XV 41/37/C 1.

For me a major Dutch composer, but one that is unknown to most, but should be great considering the quality of his music. I have wrote quite a bit about his works in my reviews on 21-3-2012, and I have nothing to add to that. Sound and performance is excellent.

Kinda disappointed by both the exclusion of the 3rd sonata, and the continued implication of its worthlessness by the CD's cover still implying it's offering the composer's full words on the form. I feel this view of the 3rd is becoming increasingly outdated, with many good recent recordings of it being made. Great performances and sound, though.
