Been hopping around this set.  Right now, the Georg Boehm disc.  Superb.  The highlight for me so far is the Corelli Recorder Sonatas.  Yes, Recorder Sonatas.

Aye, surprised me, too.

not really  ;D  I have even exchanged my ticket for Sunday's concert where there was some more Knussen ( also some Ives/Carter/Birtwistle). I have seen and heard enough of Knussen for a while  :-\

I had purposely not listened to any samples prior to booking that series of concerts and just go there with a complete open mind and see how it goes....but it just didn't work. Maybe another time  ;)

Oh--what a great idea to start the day! Think I'll put on my favorite recording of it and sit back to bask in beauty.

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

After a strenuous day of preparations for moving house, finally some music to ease my mind, and with what better as some Sonatas for Flute, Harpsichord and Cello, by Richter? It does the trick for me, as did volume II  of this highly regarded series too! It is so elegantly played and so well projected in their interpretations, that one can safely recommend them, without being scolded afterwards for giving the wrong impressions. For those of you at GMG, that keep my opinion in regard and like the time it which it is written, go for it. The sound is exemplary!

Admirable. At least you gave it a honest try.

Indeed, an open mind is the most important thing when it comes to discovering anything new. And not dismissing with just one or two hearings, but coming back to the pieces you didn't find immediately attractive. Papy, after Stravinsky, and possibly other early 20th century music, check back Messiaen. Vingt regards and Quartet for the end of time might be easier to get to grips with.

The Abbado/stravinsky you recommended a few days back is in the basket for a future purchase.

I have noted the other Messiaen recs, thank you. I'll go back to the Turangalila in any case  ;)
