Moving further ahead of Dr. Karl Henning  8) in this set, I am close to completing the cycle, and what a joy this has turned out to be.  I have been listening backwards to this set, starting from CD33 -> CD1.  I am now on CD5, Symohonies 17-20. The slow movements show a very strong "baroque" influence.  I can see why some people believe that Haydn is the link (and a vital link at that!)  between J.S. Bach and Mozart/Beethoven.

Paul Vranicky is not a extraordinary composer, he composed in the shadow of the greats, and was hugely respected by them. Figures like Haydn and Beethoven held him in great esteem. Vranicky walked in the already paved paths without composing anything out of the ordinary. And that's fine, many did and produced worthwhile music. Vranicky did too listening to his Symphony in D major and C major on this first disc. Apart from recognizing the artistic merit, these works need good advocacy. And that's precisely what it is not getting. The Dvorak Chamber Orchestra, is a fine body of players, but often imprecise in their playing, and sounding as a body of 120 players, due to the acoustics of the Rodolfium. This is getting a absurd performance. Pounding basses, violins bigger as all the Royal violins from Louis together, and I mean several of them, a loudness that is overbearing. A pity, really, but I have to say, this is a non starter, although it has friends on GMG. The present recording does in my view no service to Vranicky.

The new erato

Not much time for listening, and neither for reporting, recently, but last night I managed:

Shapero's Symphony for Classical Orchestra + Stravinsky's Psalm symphony, courtesy Bernstein, and the fist disc from this:

(thankfully without the ugly gramophone sticker).

I'm looking forward to a relaxed weekend exploring some new aquisitions. They have been piling up in the driveway.

CD 4 from this fine box released by Brilliant. I saw some buying it, but non that actually played it, so I am first I guess. ;D
Let nothing hold you back from listening to it, or buying it. Its cheap and absolutely necessary to have it. All high quality Stradivarius recordings, so musically and artistically its all as it should be, perfect! Again a mix of music, and a highly entertaining one.

On this CD 4.

Any good?

Most of the works on the disc are from Nielsen's late period, when he was writing his most beguiling and idiosyncratic music. Considering, symphonies aside, how little of this period is represented in recordings, it's definitely worth hearing.

Second time in the player, and it gets better and better. I am a admirer of the versatile composer Casella, and this disc definitely adds to this admiration, for its beautifully played and recorded, and the 3 works from different periods are a telling story of this man's genius. Wrote in more detail already about this so I will not repeat myself. A essential addition to your Casella collection.
Front to back balance is very good, sonic's in the lower strings are tight, and the brass and timpani are thunder strokes.
Cool beans!

Oh, sorry. I haven't done any comparative listening with other recordings yet. I'm not sure if I'm very skilled at judging performances.

You're taking this more seriously than it is meant.  Did it suck?
