Fafner

Okay, now. Starting my "What the hell, why not try some French music" month with a French composer I actually quite like:

Maurice Ravel - Boléro ・Pavane・Valses nobles et sentimentales・La Valse ・Alborada del Gracioso・Rapsodie espagnole
Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa

Well, I guess sometimes (always?) I am right when I am wrong.  ;D

Please do and keep us informed about your ranking. It's one of my favorite Mozart works, but I don't have a favorite performer. My only thumb rule is: for God's sake, don't rush!  :D

Back home now (was out to dinner...had a delicious grilled turbot, washed down with a young Lugano). Assembling my K.397s now. In the meantime, Berwald Symphony Singuliére, Järvi conducting the Gothenburg:

It was indeed  ;D  Jehovah! Jehovah! Jehovah!

The restaurant is Italian owned and staffed. It's the only place in town with a large selection of fresh fish. Amazingly good food and wine.

I'll be listening to three versions of Mozart's Fantasia in D minor K.397: Uchida, Kempff, Casadesus.

Kempff 5:41

Casadesus 5:48

Uchida 7:17

I went into this thinking Uchida would be the runaway winner but, in fact, Casadesus is the one I prefer. He was the most elegant and light (Mozartian?) but did not downplay the dark emotional content. Interesting to note that his timing is within seconds of your favorite YouTube version.

Indeed, Bizet's Symphony in C Major is a lovely, precocious little piece; in many ways similar to Shostakovich's No. 1.

Now off to the MET to see Carmen

I think Taras Bulba has become my favourite Janacek's work; absolutely beautiful.
