Final disc of this set, with alternative versions.

Overall verdict on this set is excellent indeed, perhaps the only drawback might be a touch too much "politeness" (and polish) here and there...

Hmmm, if I remember correctly this fault was also heard in Pinnock's account. Anyway hearing now both sets, my opinion is that sometimes Mozarts works are very politely composed, and subsequently polished as well. Mozarts fault ;D
I am glad I have both sets.

Karl, think of Lebensraum - living space!

Thank you, an excellent suggestion! (Ties in with early history reading, too.)

Enough posts had intervened, that at first, Brian, I puzzled what you meant by that comment on the Finzi Cello Concerto

I do not know the Pinnock set, but what you say about Mozart is true.

Still, Mozart by Van Immerseel or the Freiburgers has a less smooth and considered, more impromptu feel about it. :)

I chanced upon it while listening to some Graupner (YouTube sometimes works in weird but wonderful ways).

Serious table-pounding! Love Wand's Cologne set although I don't own this set, I own the slightly older, more weighty older one.

I like this recording all right; but I must admit that the Haitink/Dresdeners recording, which Jens recommended, rocks supreme.

Must root around, for Cato, long since, kindly sent the Telarc recording of the Sixth (Jesús López-Cobos in Cincinnati, I believe) . . . I don't recall how that 'un sounds, and I am keen to compare . . . .

I take your word for it. :) If there is a good offer on either the Immerseel or Freiburgers I will acquire them too, being a bit nuts about these Symphonies.

And to get on a little bit further with this box, I proposed CD 17 to myself, and subsequently put it in my player.

This time the Orchestra is the Slovak Radio SO, under the guidance of Alfred Eschwe, and he does a great job

WOW posting 19.000, not bad at all, seeing posting canons like MI.

Yeah, Wand's Sixth didn't do well in the Death Match. But then Karajan's didn't either. The Sixth is one Bruckner symphony that pays dividends buying outside the box (boxes), e.g., that Haitink, or Klemperer, Stein, Dohnänyi, Norrington (for something completely different).

Q

I actually found that set to be the least polished of all, which was the source of its great appeal to me. True, it is damned difficult to make Mozart sound anything less than beautiful, but of all of the recordings I've heard (which is innumerable), the AAM/Hogwood are tops at it. :)

Delius - a new acquisition w/ Davis; two of this composer's early works for orchestra w/ chorus - I liked the mellow atmospheric interpretation in Appalachia; a fact that I had forgotten was after leaving the Florida orange plantation, he had a short residence as a violin teacher in Danville, VA (on the NC border just 45 mins from my town).  For those interested, see the attached Fanfare review from 2011. :)

Martinu, symphony 4, Neumann set, very nice!

VERY interesting, I'd say :)

And because of that I'll go on with CD #2. I remember this to be really breathtaking (El amor brujo):

Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C major

Orchestre des Cento Soli

de Falla: El amor brujo
