Very good music, in fact a first rate composer, and excellent recordings.
Good choice Poju. :)

Thanks Harry! Very good playing and recorded sound indeed. This is the first time I hear Dittersdorf's String Quartets/Quintets. The music is just as great as I hoped for.  :)

Its an old warhorse, but I still thrill to this  :)

What CPO had, I bought, and I don't regret it for a minute.
He is a excellent string writer. :)

We all know you bought it all.  ;D

Just finished the wonderful CD. The other one is still in plastic wraps but I won't listen to it now. It's The X-Files time for me!  0:)

See you tomorrow Harry!

I should really hear this, since I love those two symphonies (don't know the overture that well) and love the participants.  But somehow over the years I've never gotten around to hearing this particular recording.

That disc is excellent, as is the other half of that Schumann cycle. And the overture, one of my favourite short orchestral pieces, is also performed superbly. :)

And currently listening to:

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, "the way it's meant to be played", if you'll excuse the use of a (good) graphics card maker's slogan. ;D

Tony, I can assure you that Clementi is one composer you won't regret exploring further! And that ASV set is a sumptuous repast of his orchestral works. Mind you, it's anything but HIP, what with the Philharmonia Orchestra in full cry and warm, glossy recorded sound to boot. Someday we'll get a HIP version of these works but in  the meantime Signor Clementi is very well served by these recordings (reissued as a set on Brilliant Classics). I own about a dozen discs of his keayboard music, and it's just as good.

Just spinning the final cd for the second time, his 3rd and 4th symphonies.  Fine music indeed.  I must explore his sonatas at some point.

One minor gripe was the unexpected, nay shocking appearance of Our National Anthem in the finale of his 2nd symphony?  Where did that one come from?

God Save the King  ;D

Was Clementi showing a touch of English Patriotism?  Not withstanding, its a fine work  ;)

Probably! Clementi (17552-1832) was English-based for most of his long life. He is best known for the famous keyboard contest with Mozart in Vienna, but that took place during one of his rare stays outside England after 1766 (1780-1785 and 1802-1810). All the symphonies were first conducted (by him) in London. He never left England after his last return to Albion in 1810. He is interred in Westminster Abbey.

Anyone who's habitually bored by Vivaldi should really check out these late concerti with Carmignola.  Beautiful playing, beautiful works, beautifully recorded...  :)

Yes! Love those discs!  :)

Thanks for the chuckle, Harry!

Hector

Pile of cheapo CPOs and a Marco Polo arrived from those very, very efficient people at jpc (postage equalled the price of one CPO).

So, whilst downloading them onto my iPod library I shall listen to Rubbra's 6th and Roussel's 1st symphonies.

Not so different as one might expect but utterly beguiling.
