For Sunday, a new arrival and recently highly recommended in the Nov/Dec issue of Fanfare - 2 CD set (at a ridiculously low price, almost a 'give-away'!):

Gesualdo, Carlo (1561-1613) - Responsories for Holy Week. Miserere. Benedictus • A Sei Voci - beautifully performed a capella singing - thoroughly relaxing, in contradiction to the reputation of the composer (a prince, wife slayer, among other goodies - check out his BIO, if interested!); the booklet is brief w/o the translations - however, attached is a PDF file obtained from the WarnerClassics website - plan to print it out later -  :D

The music is has quite a special feel to it: imagine somewhere were Haydn and Mozart left off, moving towards the later choral music by Mendelssohn and Brahms. Fascinating stuff, and exceptionally good music! Schubert wrote seven masses - that fills 4 CD's.

Sawallisch used to be the golden standard for this repertoire, but is now decidedly outdated.
I must say, it never really clicked untill these wonderfull recordings by Weil - as oustanding as his Haydn masses. Harnoncourt's series is very good as well, but is - as usual - more severe. I very much like the lighter textures produces by the boys choir - boys are also occasionally used for the shorter solos.

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Berio - Voci (ECM)

The most acceptable "cactus music" ever :P - this would be a good recommendation to someone new to modernism. I've been enjoying this disc for a few years now.
