French Ballet Music of the 1920s.

L' eventail de Jeanne.
Ballet in on act by Ten French composers:
Ravel/Octave Ferroud/Ibert/Roland Manuel/Delannoy/Roussel/Milhaud/Poulenc/Auric/Schmiddt.

Les Maries de la tour Eiffel.
Ballet in one act by members of the Groupe des Six, from the spectacle by Jean Cocteau.
Auric/Milhaud/Poulenc/Tailleferre/Honegger.

Philharmonia Orchestra/Geoffrey Simon.

First of all I think, that the recordings by Chandos in the olden days were far better as the present ones, which seem to be one sound in all venues. Not so with this oldie from 1985. State of the Art sound, with a dept and detail, that escapes nowadays engineers from Chandos, with exceptions of course...
And then the two gorgeous ballets, written by great composers, binded together with a coherence that is amazing and masterly at the same time. So enjoyable is this disc, that I played this one at least a dozen times, and still am in awe. This is not often recorded, but why should they, it would be hard to surpass this one anyway.

Michael Praetorius.

Advent and Christmas Music.

Bremer Barock Consort/Manfred Cordes.

Courtesy by JPC, this gift cd came this morning, and I am very glad with it.
The recording from 2007 is a fine one. The Bremer Barock Consort is new to my ears, and I am glad to report that most of his singers are very good. The soprano is sometimes unsure of her intonation, and sounds somewhat rough in places, especially in "Veni redemptor gentium" this comes to the fore. But that are minor points. Fact is that this a gorgeous Christmas cd.

My parents didn't have *any* Beatles in the house when I was growing up, and for some reason I shied from picking up any of their CDs until now.

Needless to say, I have been cured. :)

Greg, that's an interesting description of Dvorak...
