Organ Landscape Pomerania
Martin Rost Organ.
MDG. 3 cd's.
CD 1

Works by Buxtehude/Volckmar/Anonymus 1617/Fischer/Alberti/Anonymus 1650/Ritter/Schmugel/Wolff/CPE Bach/Hertel.

Organs played on: Stralsund/Griebenow/Wartin/Deyelsdorf/Zettemin/Rugenwalde/Gingst.

The second box in this MDG series, and every bit as exiting as the first. Not only many unknown composers, but also Organs of great renown, allthought not often used in recordings. Holger Schlegel, a topnotch engineer made fabulous registrations. I do not know who tuned all the instruments, but it is done to perfection. As are the performances by Martin Rost, this man is a giant amongst his peers.
I am really looking forward to all the boxes laying ready to be played

I listened to the fragments at Amazon, Harry. At jpc they don't give any details about which composer belongs to which track... I agree with your findings. First impression: concentrated music, very diverse; those Six Studies sound like six poems, each with its own special character. And what I heard of the string quartet (written when he was only 18) was quite impressive, too. Ideas tumbling over each other.

Well then, what stops you from ordering it.
5,99 euro's is a good deal right, and its a rare recording.
When its sold out its gone forever, for CPO is not very likely to record more works by Adorno as they allready did.
I saw the complete release list for 2008, and there is nothing on it..3 new operettas are there....... ;D ;D ;D, but not of this composer! :o

No, 5,99 isn't much. You're right. But Harry - I didn't know you were so fond of French singer Adamo!?  ;)

Successful in what way? In whipping up a little excitement while the orchestra autopilots through the pieces, with a few impulses from him here and there? "Technically", he does everything more or less "right", no doubt, but that's not what I was talking about when I said it takes good conductors a very long time to develop. Some other conductors take many years, sometimes decades before they tackle certain pieces, and that's not because they can't technically conduct them, but because they feel they need to gain a deeper understanding of the music before they can really "say" something about the music. Until then, they learn their craft in all its fine nuances, but not by jetting around the world posing in front of world class orchestras, but by learning and working steadily.
Maybe he his learning his art steadily and conducting world class orchestras at the same time. We don't know that he isn't working his butt off each and every night perfecting his technique. I don't think it's fair to assume that because he's been conducting top bands like the NYPO around the world he was been stagnant in his development. Anyway I don't see how you can knock a guy. Listening to his interviews he seems modest and likeable and is definitely not a phony of any sort.

Yeah, me neither and I must confess I'm shocked... :)

But the most shocked was I dear friends, I will forthwith pour myself a wee dram of excellent malt, and try to remedy the effects of daring mention the name of him that must not be named..... :)

Cant believe I missed out on this music for decades (Mozart's chamber music didn't work for me before I went HIP). At least I got the recording right 1st time around. :)
Recommended.

Beethoven
Cello Sonata, opus 69 in A major.
Cello Sonata  opus 5, No. 1 & 2, in F major & G minor.

Anner Bijlsma, Cello.
Jos van Immerseel, Piano.

Hardly needs any introduction..right Que? ;D
I find these recordings very refreshing, and frankly sitting comfortably next to my modern performances, Fournier/Kempff.
The sound is fine.

Harry, I'm curious if you've had a listen to Beethoven's String Trios yet?  The ST's are something I want in my collection this year, so I'd like to know some good performances of these.  :)

Not yet, at least from this box, but maybe you will be able to buy this box, its only 34,95 euro's at the moment for 60 cd's of mostly outstanding performances. And you have all the chamberworks at one go.

Are those with the L'Archibudelli (Beths, Kussmaul, Bijlsma)? Top performances!

Last night I was at the reopening of Merkin Concert Hall, a 450-seat venue here known for its good acoustics and used by many new music ensembles.  A chamber orchestra of freelancers, conducted by composer Aaron Jay Kernis, did an excellent job with Aaron Copland's Music for the Theatre, which I hadn't heard in probably 20 years.  They followed this with Kernis's Simple Songs (1991), arranged for chamber orchestra with soprano Esther Heideman.

I have the Mutter/Giuranna/Rostropovich set on DG. Not HIP, of course, but fine performances and great sonics.
