I know he wrote two. Never heard them. But the year is still young.

Good luck at the office, btw. No listening... 'Een hard gelag'!

Voor mij is dat letterlijk zo! :P

What about this one? ;D

The new erato

A fabulous violin concerto, and a favorite for 30 years. How I wish DG would reissue the Zukofsky/Tilson Thomas on CD (it hasn't been available for many years, and I'm not enamoured of arkivmusik's CDR's).

Goodmorning my friends!

Starting with Espresso and some chocolate Truffels...... ;D

And then off to the office on Saturday, alas, and no listening today.
So I expect you to do it all, right? :)

Ja! Harry, send some of those truffles this way, please. My fiancee is cuckoo about them! laughing

Busting a semi-phat move on the London Philharmonic's take on La Sinfonia Fantastica.

Thanks for the sample Que.  I enjoy the singing, but not sure if the harpsichord(?) goes well with it.  Your thoughts?

Quote from: Harry on February 23, 2008, 12:25:08 AM
Loved the singing and the Harpsichord, it is well blended, and the choir sounds well integrated.
My main objection is the sound, somewhat diffuse, or is that your download Que?

Posted my comments HERE:)

The first time I hear these famous Mozart works:

Agree--the Naxos recording is better than none but doesn't really float my boat.  Two or three years ago we heard Gil Shaham play it with MTT/SFSO.  Stunning!  Wish they had recorded that!

Now playing:  Gould, Goldbergs, '81

Great way to start a Saturday morning David.  Think I will spin mine as well and hope that it helps break the sun through.

Hope it works for you, Bill.    8)  We're battening down the hatches for what promises to be another big storm--and I still have to go into the office and get some work done today before it hits.  But if I didn't take a little time to savor some small joys first, I'd be throwing my life away!  I already had the pleasure of some leisurely snuggling in a warm bed with my sweet wife and cantankerous cat before getting up to put the coffee pot on, and now Gould's leisurely Goldbergs are setting just the right tone for the day ahead.

These works I also heard for the first time today, and I especially liked symphony no. 3!

Bach, JS Goldberg Variations w/ Christophe Rousset on harpsichord - after listening to my 'piano' versions of these works w/ Schiff & Dinnerstein, decided that I needed a change of pace; this disc is part of a 4-CD set, so if you want some 'Papa' Bach keyboard works on this instrument, not a bad place to start for the price.

Rousset is excellent in this performance of the GVs - he is playing on an original Henri Hemsch harpsichord made in Paris in 1751 (and restored in Paris by Anthony Sidey & Frederic Bal); apparently, French harpsichord construction at the time was different from other 'schools' - Sidey states in the liner notes that "this instrument...is characterised by an extremely light touch which favours a crisp interpretation" - the instrument really does sound quite good and is well recorded; and an interesting review from ClassicalNet, if interested. :D

Vivaldi: Concerto in F major RV 97 and Concerto in D major RV 94 (Il Giardino Armonico) - After a long period of being burnt out on Vivaldi, a few years ago I discovered this group.  They play with a gutsy vitality that I had frankly never heard in this repertoire.  Can't say that I crave Vivaldi that often, but when I do, this group is marvelous.  Of the two above, the D major concerto is particularly infectious.

James MacMillan: Tryst (1989, Jerzy Maksymiuk/BBC Scottish SO) - I'm really grooving on MacMillan lately, between works like this (for chamber ensemble) and some of his choral music.

I think Perahia is near the top picks for these concertos!
