J S BACH:     Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin BWV 1001/1006    / Nathan Milstein   (DG)

To me, one of the greatest recordings ever made. There is here the extraordinary beauty of Milstein sound, the perfection of the counterpoint, the sublime eloquence of the phrasing. The Fugue of the 3rd Sonata is, perhaps, the most absolute performance in violin I ever heard.

No matter the quality of other versions (Grumiaux, Heifetz in the Chaconne), this is THE VERSION of this supreme masterpieces.

Good call! Which version?

Alpine Symphony: The All Japan Sym. Orch, conductor Takashi Asahina.

Very good, though that slow opening and slower close seem to give orchestras some problems; with slighly ragged releases of notes and very slightly staggered chordings.

CPE Bach.
Four Orchestral Symphonies with twelve obbligato parts. WQ 183, 1-4.
Kammerorchester <CPE Bach> Hartmut Haenchen.
Capriccio recording 1986, in the Berlin Christus Kirche.
Super budget cd.

I have written about these symphonies in my earlier review, that I liked them very much, still do. Well articulated, lively tempi, perfect synthesis between strings and winds, and a well considered affinity between orchestra and conductor.
Well recorded too!

Headphones come in versions? . . .

If by headphones you mean the Alpensinfonie by R. Strauss, then yes!  ;)

You probably mean Berov.

???

Michel Beroff calls himself Michel Beroff. Everyone else calls him Michel Beroff.

The Goldberg Variations usually annoy me after a few minutes, but for some reason I like them this morning.  I'm still sick though, so maybe my musical taste buds are off.  :D  Anyway, I'm enjoying this while it lasts.  0:)

The new erato

The brand new volume 5 of the Gardiner series of Bach cantatas. Just listening to what seems to be a fine version of one of my favorite cantatas, BWV 45, es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist.

I have fond memories of my first introduction to this cantata on a LP under Rilling on the strangely enough, now defunct SDG label (from Kassel, Germany). Fine soloists on that LP, Sheila Armstrong, Norma Procter, Kurt Equiluz and Erich Wenk. From the days when the thought of ever owning a complete cantata cycle seemed unattainable.
