Peregrine

I wonder what he is pondering?

Yes, we have no bananas

Kuhlau

Gatti is probably pondering why so few people appreciated his accounts of Tchaikovsky's last three symphonies, and wondering whether or not the same fate will befall his account of Mahler's Fourth Symphony. ;)

And hello to all the friends of George's who have joined here recently. :)

Thank you for having us.  I am watching another incredible Federer/Nadal finals match, this time in Melbourne, and spinning some more good vinyl purchased today:

    • Schoenberg: Verklaerte Nacht - Herbert von Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic.
Orig. DG 1975 vinyl, mastered by Willem Makee, love that sleeve art!
    And:

    • Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn - Christa Ludwig (mezzo-soprano) and Walter Berry (baritone) with Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic.
Orig. Columbia Masterworks 1970? gatefold vinyl with bonus 12" disk of same principals recording same piece with LB at piano -- I really like this version.
    And also...

    • Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 - Bruno Walter/Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York.
Orig. Columbia Masterworks 1951 mono LP, anybody familiar with this one?

    How about that first symphony?

Fabulous, in fact, I think this cycle is as good as it gets IMO. So well played and excellently recorded.

Indeed. I got my set new for something like $10 at tower records. At the time I had a couple sets and didn't see Boehm as bettering them, but he sure is amazing!

Morning George.  I may be listening to this set in a week too.  For some inexplicable reason, I actually got an order confirmation shortly after I had placed my order with MDT yesterday.  Now this has never happened before for any of the seven orders I placed earlier in January.

My guess is that maybe some employees were out on holiday and have returned, thus speeding up their processing.

Rubinstein is famous for his Chopin and rightly so, but I could never feel comfortable with his playing in this recording.
I have the original mono LP and the SACD and still I cannot enjoy it as much as I would like it too.

Is there something wrong with me?

He recorded the Scherzi earlier, have you tried these? They are paired on RCA with the second recording of the Nocturnes (in mono.)

Not sure if other Ballade recordings exist by the pianist.
