He recorded the Scherzi earlier, have you tried these? They are paired on RCA with the second recording of the Nocturnes (in mono.)

Not sure if other Ballade recordings exist by the pianist.

No, probably I should.
About this recording of the Ballades and Scherzos, there is something in his rubato that makes the music to sound discontented.
Maybe this is already in the music, I am not sure.

Well, pulled out a couple of CDs from a favorite group of the past - have not purchased any of their recent releases, but the two below from the late 80s I still enjoy - about the time I saw them in concert locally, too - any more recent recommendations?  :)

P.S. reason for edit - some how posted before done!  :-\

It took me a long time to warm to Rubinstein's Chopin. While he is still is not my favorite in any of the major works (except maybe Bercuese), I do enjoy his interpretations now more than I did at first.

I think Maria Tipo comes closest to nailing all 4 Ballades. The Scherzi were never among my favorite Chopin works.

Lovely in the morning.

Hey Dave!

Lotsa music planned over here today and most importantly, no football.  8)

PC 1 and 4 from this exquisite set. Does it continue with the same high standard it could be my favourite complete set of Beethoven PC's. And it's perfect to have Czech PO as the pairing orchestra!

Same here - not interested in the Big Game; in fact, we went out last night to our mountain bistro restaurant just down the street - usually a Sunday event for us, but there is an adjacent bar area w/ some large TVs, so I suspect there will be a lot of yelling in there tonight! (made that mistake last year) - Dave   :(

Yes, one of the very best sets of the PCs IMO, if not the best.

If the slow movement on your PC 2 is defective, PM me.  8)

They are still going strong. This morning I listened to their new Mozart recordings with Jonathan Biss.
Very nice readings.

I hear that for an encore, Biss often works out a few differential equations on a blackboard.  ;D

(sorry Chris, couldn't resist)

I wonder what he is pondering?

He is wondering why Mahler didn't score for trombones in this symphony I think.  I too ponder this in my avatar.

I have completely revamped my impression of Neumann over the past year thanks to Harry.  This collection is as good as his Dvorak and Mahler cycles.  He really highlights everything with a very fine baton.  The sound quality is also great.  Martinu's symphonies exude an energetic need to express magic and tradgedy.  Superb.
