Lousy recorded sound is something no musicians can control, Henryk Szeryng included ...
Chuck Norris is, as always, an exception.  ;D

ASV gave him bad sound for his recording of Manuel Ponce's concerto, but it's still a great performance!
......and the best work (by far IMO) in the Brilliant 8CD set of Mexican music.

VERDI:    Il Trovatore             / Price, Domingo, Cossotto, Mehta  (1970)

Mehta is splendid, subtle and with a perfect articulation. He characterizes very well each scene.

The singers are decent but not very convincing. Like Macbeth and in a lesser degree Rigoletto, Il Trovatore is an opera with a large influence of the aesthetic of the belcanto of Bellini and Donizetti, in a period of transition, Verdi trying to reach a new language. I think this is not the right repertoire for Price and Domingo. Price has not the vocal color for the role and Domingo sings most of the time with effort, with no elegance. Milnes is good but, as usual, very conventional. Cossotto sings very well even if she has not the vocal presence of Barbieri.

The ideal Trovatore would have Mehta as conductor (if he was born 30 years earlier) and Björling, Milanov, Barbieri as singers.

We'll see how much I like this - may be an expencive proposition as Hyperion has lots of these lesser known oratorios with the Kings consort available.

I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

From the Brüggen box: Haydn, symphony No.45. Probably Harnoncourt in the Londons next. I freaking love this composer! :D

Oh, it's too early, Sara . . . partly misled by the lower-case letters (I suppose), I read that as 'paris' & 'lotion' symphonies.

I'm glad you didn't misread 'Paris' as something along the same lines, there...

These Bernstein Sibelius recordings are very good, as are the other 4 symphonies also recorded in the '60s.  The complete cycle was repackaged a few years ago by Sony France and is still available from Amazon marketplace sellers in the US here or directly from Amazon elsewhere in the world.

Now playing: Debussy Preludes, Steven Osborne

All this talk of Sibelius put me in the mood for this:

Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. - Ludwig van Beethoven
