George

Maiden spin. So far I have heard just the first two quartets. The sound is better than I expected, but still muffled and not that great. The performances are straightforward, something that I expect will take some getting used to.

What is the recording date on these, George?
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

The world could use more interludes like yours, Karl. :)

Do not base this first one on the fairly lame cover....absolutely beautiful music.  An old Gurn rec. if I recall properly.  OOP and only one left on Amazon US.

This one going for $44 used Dave (Sonic).

Bill - still have not purchased that Haydn Duo disc but did see that one copy for $9 used! The cost of those Baryton Trios w/ Hsu is ridiculous (think I bought both @ BRO, probably $8-$9 total?) - but if you really want the baryton, the new Brilliant box of 21 CDs is certainly a bargain - I picked it up from MDT for about $44, but just checked and the price has been upped by $10 more bucks; may be TOO much, but hey, just listen a few discs at a time! Recorded 1956-1974

In some of the narrowest mono I have ever heard. Like it was recorded in a hallway.

I have that set, I while back I bought the Brilliant 100 Symphonies Box in a moment of completist zeal.   It seems generally OK - what do you think?

I'm enjoying all these a great deal, Franco.  I love the violin solo bits in the Andante movements, among many other things.  I feel that making the circuit will sustain itself as an activity, and more than that, that I will listen to the whole set again.

Now:

Haydn
Symphony № 11 in E-flat Major
Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra

You saw it coming:

His development in the medium is kind of mind-boggling. Under five years between Le matin and The Philosopher - another five years between that and 39...

First play. For some reason Rounds is recalling RVW's Concerto Grosso for me in the first movement.

Well, let's bring that to only logical conclusion - Haydn is a fraud and his symphonies were written by number of different people because as you so clearly, and rightfully, stated one can't simply develop that much that fast 0:)

First listen: the reading of the slow movement is a long way from what I'm used to, but in general I'm finding this very compelling.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."
