Jean Sibelius
Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82
San Francisco Symphony Orchestra|Michael Tilson Thomas

Live|c. February 2004

The pastoral sounding opening reminds me of early Mahler.
Much as I love MTT, I don't think he quite gets Sibelius.  Maybe you have to be Finnish, or Scandinavian, or a drunk...?

Why are people choosing such scary avatars, these days? Guys, doing this will NOT ward off Robert Newman.
;D

edit:  Whoops, I see you really liked that 5th.  You're not Scandinavian, or a drunk, are you?  (Not necessarily redundant ;) )

Not really a problem for me, at least right now, since this was my proper first listen. (Oops, forgot to mention, that was a FLF!) And the good thing is, I liked it. :)

By the way, do you think Glazunov would have made a great premier out of this symphony? :D ;)

Listening on a crummy radio while sitting outside. Any passers by probably think a funeral is being held or something.

Opus106

Adagio sostenuto: there were a couple of moments that I felt the music was very Chopinesque - or should I say that Chopin was very Hammerklavier-istic(!) in most of his music?
