True, but on the plus side, downloads (legal and otherwise) have made music recordings much more available than ever. As much as I love reading liner notes and flipping through the used bins, I prefer the greater availability of recordings these days. I can't think of a single performance of any genre that I have not been able to obtain whether through online stores, downloads or torrents. I honestly think this is a great time to be a music collector.

Absolutely ! This site has fantastic bargains of pre-1959 recordings, including complete classic recordings for one (un, uno, ein) euro.

For years I have searched in vain for a recording of the Milhaud quartets before getting them from mp3 downloads.

York Bowen - acquired the recordings below not too long ago (a 'new' composer to me suggested by Sara); just re-listening today; really enjoying the Viola & Piano Works at the moment; solo piano music up next!  :D

I think this recording is on Naxos Historical as well.  I bought all the Schnabel Beethoven Sonatas volumes on Naxos Historical back in March but skipped all the piano works with orchestra ...

I picked this one up from George, so I am sure it is in the Naxos canon as well.  Worth the completion IMO.  :)

Not enough hiss and crackles on this one, George.  I had to double check to make sure you had not sent me your Naxos by mistake. ;)

I deliberately skipped the orchestral works because I do not care much for orchestral music in monaural.  I can deal with monaural piano recordings like this one just fine, which by the way sounds great to me ...

Now playing CD1 from this set.  Well, it was not conducted by the now disgraced Robert King.  It is Handel's work nonetheless ...

No worries, just fire up a red hot skillet and make some sunny-side-up eggs.  ;)

The first movement is blowing me away.....or at least making me fear that I am going to be blown away.  What a heartaching, terrifying movement.  :o  Wonderful!

For me, the chamber type music comes through better in mono as well.  Just too many performances that I do not want to miss to dismiss the others.  I have also found with more listening of these, my enjoyment has increased considerably.

Mine too. I can say that my appreciation of the sound of modern recordings has increased considerably since I got into historical recordings. I am much less picky about things that I was picky about when I first started with classical.
