Can't compare with others, but what I heard of Haitink's set, I quite liked it.

I've heard some Boult, heard some Previn, heard some Bakels, and also own the Handley set.  I like the Haitink set very well.

I hadn't thought I "needed" Haitink's RVW, having some Boult, some Previn, some Thomson, some Slatkin, and the complete Handley set, even though several fellows I respect like it quite a bit, Benji (an excellent guide for my tastes) among them.  Now between you and Harry it looks like a must buy--what say you in comparison with Handley?

Thread duty:  The usual Sunday morning baroque-fest continues, now with Zehetmair's Bach Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin

Brahms Piano Concerto #2; MacDowell Piano Concerto #2
(van Cliburn, Reiner, Hendl)

The Brahms is way too fast for my taste. Much prefer Ashkenazy/Previn and the Gilels recordings. The MacDowell is magnificent.

Elizabeth Maconchy (1907–1994)

  • Symphony for Double String Orchestra (1953)
  • Serenata Concertante for Violin and Orchestra (1962)
  • Music for Strings (1983)

Three substantial compositions from a composer who might be regarded the English answer - and "English" the music is, and remains so, in the end - to Martinů and Bartók.  :)

Indeed two symphonies for strings (but the second was, modestly, just named "music" for strings, seperated by a third work, the Serenatata Concertante, that is equally symphonic in structure, especially.

Korngold, Erich - String Quartets & Sextet w/ Flesch Quartet; yet another Brilliant bargain; the 3 SQs were written between 1920-45, and the Sextet in 1914-15 when he was still a teenager!

Bartok, Bela - String Quartets w/ Keller Quartet; and another bargain 2-CD set on Apex; recorded in 1993-94 - just getting started this morn on the first disc - excellent MusicWeb review HERE -  :)

And again this excellent second Symphony by a unknown master, that is played very often in my home, a master in orchestration, that produces a lot of fine melodies, really well crafted.
A very fine recording and performance.

Very good recordings, and more than excellent recordings. I played this set very often Dave!

Yeah, honestly, what are the folks at CPO thinking?

Some of you Haitink/RVW dissenters need to start Amazon reviewing - the set has 5/5 on both US and UK. I don't hate the set, but find it a bit superfluous. Thomson does this "heady" kind of RVW better, I find.

I have the string quartets, and I still haven't warmed up to them.  I shall try them again when I return to the states!
