Now playing this CD, which arrived from MDT over the weekend ...

Beethoven: String Quartet in E flat major, Op. 127 (Orion String Quartet) - A fine mix of grit and lyricism, to my ears on the fierce side (a plus).  I enjoyed their set of the middle quartets a lot, but this is quite marvelous.

And now...

Beethoven: String Quartet in C sharp minor, Op. 131 - Same as above.  Obviously there are many excellent versions of these quartets, but I find the Orion performances very fresh, highly enjoyable.  The sound quality is superb: they were recorded by Adam Abeshouse at LeFrak Concert Hall at Queens College.

Just keep in mind that I'll be in Boston for a week starting 9 July to visit my son and see some of the hallmarks of my youth.  I haven't been back since the 1970's.

In the meantime, I've been listening to Haydn's cello concertos courtesy of Coin and Hogwood (the best ever recording of the work).

But is Hogwood & Company HIP enough for your taste?  Some on the forum do not think much of him ...

Answer to question - Of course.

Comment on statement - Not my concern.

Oscar Strauss.
"Ein Walzertraum"
Operetta. ( Highlights)
Soloists: Renate Holm, Else Liebesberg, Dagmar Hermann, Rudolf Christ, Herbert Prikopa.
Choir and Orchestra der Wiener Volksoper, Franz Bauer Theussl.
Recordings dates unknown.

Not heard much, but better as its reputation. It is well composed. The sound is good within reason. Apart from mezzo Dagmar Hermann, with a somewhat hollow voice, and a tendency to vibrate more as advisable, the soloists are very good.

A picture of Renate Holm.

Really a fine compilation, well sung and within reason a good recording. Lotte Rysanek is a gem.
"Lippen schweigen's flustern Geigen.......beautiful!

I think I have stated that Haydn is not one of my favorite composers, but that's a long way from not liking his music.

Quoted for truth.

End of last week, I received a BRO order of about a dozen Helios CDs ($5 each) - listened to many on a trip to the mountains over the weekend, but on my 'little' portable speakers - now getting a chance to hear them on my den speakers -  :D

Glazunov, Alexander (1865-1936) - Solo Piano Music, Vols. 1 & 2 w/ Stephen Coombs - I own little of this composer's music (Piano Concertos w/ Coombs & one symphony); apparently Coombs recorded four volumes of these solo works for keyboard - BRO had just the first two.

The variety of music of these two discs is marvelous & the playing dazzling - listings for all 4 discs & brief comments can be found on the Hyperion Website HERE:)
