At this price, I may as well pick up the Bertini's set as well, though I thought this Bernstein's set was the only set I would need.  There is no doubt the Bertini's set should have better SQ.

Stuart - I'm listening to the 3rd Symphomy at the moment - so far, quite impressed w/ these performances; the instruments are gloriously heard individually, esp. the winds & brass - the sound is quite satisfactory for me, although some complaints on 'compressed' dynamics have been voiced (just does not seem to be a major concern).

Not sure that one can have just 'one' Mahler set, hopefully the Chailly & Bertini boxes will satisfy me - Mahler is just one of those symphonist open to varied interpretations, e.g. do you want to put your own personality into the music (Bernstein is an example IMO - I'm dumping the 3-CDs of his that I currently own in this music), do you want to see Mahler's vision, do you want to see this music as a representation of life & death (whether a positive affirmation or negative), or is there some other way(s) of interpretation.  One conductor's vision may just not enough, and certainly not for all of the works.  Dave  :D

Dave,  I agree with your assessment when it comes to how a composer's works should be evaluated - through the interpretations of different conductors.  With close to 20 Beethoven Symphonies Cycles, 10 versions of St Matthew Passion and 20 versions of Brandenburg Concertos, I certainly have been a subscriber of such notion.  My only problem is, I have never been a big fan of Mahler works.  Twenty years ago, I could not stand Mahler works as they just sounded too depressing to me ...
