'Morning, Harry.

How funny! What for me is a very pleasant Romantic music for you is a very irritating hammering. Yet another proof for the essential subjectivity of musical experience.  :)

I have to get with Florestan on this one. Those sonatas are, in my humble opinion, some of the main reasons those men are considered up with the greatest composers in history.

From having listened extensively to Shostakovich's Preludes in particular, I'm convinced of his elite craftmanship...moreso than from any of his string quartets or symphonies. But that's me.

Recordings George is referring to:

Ahh, thank you. Those sets are very tempting.

LPs

Nicolai - Overture to "Der Tempelritter" (Adler/London)
D'Indy - Andante Cantabile for Horn & Strings (Bourgue/Peters International)
Mendelssohn - Symphony #3 (Karajan/DGG)

Haffner

Shostakovich Preludes (Violin and Piano renditions) op.34

Kalinovsky, violin
Goncharova,piano

I'd listened to these two do the op.134 Shosty Violin Sonata earlier and enjoyed it. But these Preludes are just plain excellent.

Black Knight

Chopin's nocturnes, sadly by Barenboim... I wish I had a CD of them with another performer  :(

I love the preludes from Shostakovich my dear friend, my quarrel is only with the Sonatas!
Thought I should set the record straight. :)

Overall I must admit that I'd reach for the Symphonies, SQs, and most certainly the Preludes well before any of the sonatas. But I understand how Shostakovich perhaps was reaching more for a "new kind of sonata".

Although I'm not wild about many of the results, I still respect them for what they are, an attempt to redefine a form of music, and I imagine you do as well, Harry.

#5629
Antonio Jose Martinez Palacios. (1902-1936)

Sinfonia Castellana.

Suite de la opera "Elmozo de Mulas".

Sketches of Country Dancing.

March of the lead soldiers.

Suite Ingenua for Piano and Strings.

Albert Rosado, Piano.
Castille and Leon SO/Alejandro Posada.

This very talented composer was shot during the Spanish Civil War only 34 years old. This Castillian Symphony is a gorgeous introduction to the art of Palacios. It is a bloody shame that all this talent is wasted, by brute force of bullets, as so many, Lorca being one of them.
What he has left us is top quality music that is well performed by this Orchestra. I urge you to hear this very melodious music with many refreshing moments. :)
The recording is well done, with lots of punch and detail.

Nice HIP recording with a reconstruction of the Stadler clarinet. Very nice :)

This:

Some really quite astonishing pianism from Wild, with great support from Horenstein and the RPO. These performances move into my personal joint first place with Hough/Litton/Dallas Symphony Orchestra (Hyperion).
