Back to the early 1990s and the moment I first heard this revelationary sound: Vagn Holmboe, Symphony No. 7 in one movement (1950)

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Tonight, a piano recital at (Le) Poisson Rouge by Taka Kigawa, playing Debussy (Preludes, Book II), Ferneyhough (Lemma-Icon-Epigram), Dai Fujikura (Joule) and Stravinsky (Three Movements from Petrouchka).  Heavy program!  Haven't heard him play, but The New York Times gave him an excellent review last fall.

Hey Dave, I think I'll join you. Going to play the Brahms viola sonatas (Nobuko Imai, viola - from Brilliant's Complete Brahms box).

Andrei - never heard of Edelmann but the performers (esp. tangent piano) & label sound quite attractive!  :D

How is the music?  Dave  :)

Hi, Dave!

From what little information I could gather, our guy was a musical victim of the French Revolution!

Now, the music is quite good, with some unexpected twists --- judge for yourself! Worth listening, IMHO.

Why, I hate it --- no, really hate it! For God's sake, they are Clarinet Sonatas, not Viola! I dare anyone telling me viola sounds better than clarinet in these ones! :D

Jordi Savall - Istanbul

I don't know if it's strictly speaking, "classical" music, but it is certainly beautiful music.  Extremely beautiful music.

One way to think of it, does the piece sound better on viola than on clarinet.  But the other way, is there anything better for a viola and piano to play?  Is there?

I so agree with you. :)

They pretty much just cover pieces by modern composers in this album. So far, only listened to them play Christian Wolff's "Edges," which was pretty awesome!  :o

SIBELIUS    Piano Music vol.5  Trees, Flowers, Mandolinetto, misc pieces      background music
IBERT         Chamber Music vol.2 (Olympia release, also available from Brilliant on a 2-disc set but the Olympia has fuller notes with some pictures)     includes his String Quartet and Trio for Violin, Cello and Harp
I won't mind hearing these pieces again when I take the Brilliant set down for re-shelving.

George,  Good evening.  Is this CD OOP?

Krommer, Franz (1759-1831) - Clarinet Quartets w/ Dieter Klöcker & Consortium Classicum - our dinner music for the night - 2CD set of just wonderful music of the time!  Recordings date to 1992 and well recorded - now, I love Dieter on his instrument, which is a 'modern' clarinet - would enjoy to hear these works on a 'period' instrument, so any suggestions?  :D
