Probably not much influence on each other, but both studied together under François Marmontel and Augustin Savard at the Paris Conservatoire.

Well, there you go; a lot of what is important and distinctive in Debussy's music, is where he is scoffing at his Conservatoire training ; )

Niels W. Gade.
Complete Symphonies.
CD III.

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, opus 15.

A brooding beginning of this symphony, "Presto" has dark undertones well captured by Jarvi, with tempi not impaired, the urgency is driven by the strings and the excellent brass.

Does it mean Beautiful Gift, or something to that effect?

No.  ;D

Well, almost. Schoon = [ant. meaning of the word] `beautiful' + woerd = [also antiquated] `river dune'. In the case of the landscape of Holland (= flat coastal area of the Netherlands) a river dune looking like this:

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Mozart.
Complete sonatas for Fortepiano and Violin.

The sense of authenticity is amazing.

I like this even better than the Naxos disc (of whose quartet I don't recall the name . . . .)

This disc seems familiar Karl?  :)

Bach: Cello Suite No. 1 In G Major, BWV 1007

Have become interested in these works - they are quite a bit more expressive than I first thought :).

Yo Yo Ma over-romanticized Bach Cello Suites IMO.

mahler10th

Robert Syph
Robert Schumann
Symphony 1
Kubelik BPO

Nice big opening theme, setting everything up a la Beethoven.
The playing by Kubelik is as expected, a poetical epic, nice tempo, I could come back to this again and again.  DG Recording quality stands up with bright clarity.
It is said his Schumann cycle with the Bavarian RSO (which was recorded in exactly the same building!)  is warmer and somehow 'better' because oif this.  Well, the BPO recordings here were a little earlier, and it's Kubeliks poetics with a bit of bite.

Ich denke, dass diese Aufnahme sehr gut ist.
Danke.
Aye.

Aye; many thanks, Ray!  (The G Major quartet was my "wound-dressing music" last night.)

Smoking wreaks havoc on the voice. I am very surprised to learn that FDD smoked.  :o

Hm, that doesn't look like FDD to me ( 0:)), but, FWIW, he did (does?) smoke (similarly to Chaliapin, James Morris, Cesare Siepi, Caruso, Scotti, Rene Pape etc.). I've read that Domingo sometimes smokes a cigar!

(Bjorling, Fritz Wunderlich and Hermann Prey - heavy drinkers! >:D)

Harry - I have a couple of discs w/ Hogwood doing the Gade Symphonies; per chance have you heard any of those performances, and if so, do you have an opinion of the performances, i.e. Hogwood vs. Jarvi?  Thanks - Dave  :D

Dave I had 2 of the recordings with Hogwood on Chandos, but eventually decided against them, first of all because of the big boned recording, and secondly because his interpretation let me stone cold after a while. Jarvi's tempi are better, and his sense for Gade is more acute, recordings are better too. Somehow he drives more of the composer out of the notes as Hogwood does.

Now playing CD1 from this set, which arrived early this week ...

Just finished with CD2 of this set.  Great virtuoso performance by Monica Huggett ...
