Oh, just realised it's his birthday. I will listen to Le Marteau next then!
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Solidarity, Paul!

I love Le marteau.

Curiously, though, having just seen 200 Motels, I find myself captioning along with Jeanne Deroubaix: The girl is fixing him some broth . . . .

The new erato

This is a wonderful series of quartets as far as 3 listens to vol 1 and this initial listen to vol 2 indicates. The reviewer in the latest issue of IRR gave a glowing review of vol 3 and noted a strong desire to hear vol 1 & 2. I bought vol 1 one month ago, this disc arrived last week so I'm going at it the other way round. No disrespect to Mr Sculthorpe, but my discs arrived with much nicer covers than on the image shown.

L e t   m e   r e p e a t   m y s e l f. This is absolutely bloody outrageously good. Quartet no 11 with the subtitle Jabiru Dreaming is an absolute masterpiece.

Now I need to buy absolutely everything available by this amazing Tasmanian.

Another winner for me from the BUY ME list from Hyperion. They sell the dics for a Naxos price, so bargains galore.
I enjoyed this carefully made recording with music by John Danyel. Its all the music he composed, or what can be found back, but what you hear is very good, and well performed.
All info and music samples. Please try.

Today is First Listen Friday or something like that, right?  Well, I just downloaded this and I am listening to it for the first time.   :)

Another bargain that I picked up with JPC, is this beautifully recorded disc with music by Aldebrando Subissati. Performed on authentic instruments, its a performance to remember.

I'm guessing it's a first for the recording, and not the symphony itself. ;)

I'll join the party with this:

Johann Sebastian Bach- Leopold Stokowski
Passacaglia in C minor, BWV 582 [Arranged for orchestra]

Handel's keyboard Suites played by pianist Ragna Schirmer on a 3-cd Berlin Classics set.  Although not in Richter's exalted level, the performances are thoroughly rewarding and a much better propostion than the new Fisher disc on Naxos where romanticized flourishes mix with deficient nuance.

from yesterday's acquisitions
de BÉRIOT  solo violin Caprices and Studies   on Naxos    -   delightfully jaw-dropping, if you've played the violin, execution of melodious pieces that players might wish the composer had been executed for.    And there is the advantage of not one theme underlying it for an hour.
Bella Hristova deserves a mention for the exceptional playing.
SIBELIUS    Incidental music to SCARAMOUCHE   fits in the opus list after Luonnotar and before The Oceanides
"Keep your hand on the throttle and your eye on the rail as you walk through life's pathway."

I played from this box the Symphonies No. 1 & 2, and Capriccio Espagnol. Marvelous performances and recordings.

Always liked Earth Cry especially.

I have that on an ABC double (coupled with the fine Requiem with didgeridoo); but thanks for the hint!

Now playing:

Another wonderful disc. I absolutely adore early Venetian opera.

Could you make a short list of what you think is most worth hearing? I'm very little familiar with it beyond Monteverdi.

This composer is starting to grow on me, I think the Solway Symphony is a very outstanding work. Took me some time to grasp, but I've got the hang of it now.
Fine performance and recording.
