Dave: I have some old discs of Perl, Manno & Schiefen, recorded during the nineties. When they were younger they recorded a good amount of music for Arte Nova and they are generally quite good. Anyway, I collected those discs for a sort of "Chauvinism" because Alfredo Perl is a Chilean pianist. I even own his complete Beethoven's piano sonatas recorded on the same label.  :)

Antoine - hello from a 'barrier island' off the coast of South Carolina!  Amazing how one can now keep in contact w/ the world in an island condo -  :D

Thanks for the comments on Perl - the liner notes are not that complete but of course mention his heritage - this is a nice disc for those who may be interested in 'another' aspect of LvB!  Dave  :)

OFFENBACH Croquefer ou Le dernier des Paladins
pick-up ensemble?   recorded in Paris 1981      does have the complete text

Is this a disc or an LP? I have been trying to get as much Offenbach as I can, but never came across this.

LP   Bourg BG 2004  echoey sound in the studio Métronome - Paris.   Only the singers and conductor/arranger are credited.   Orchestra is probably what one might have expected at a small theatre for a one-act  (fl, ob, tr, vn, vla, cello, perc.).  Full text supplied for the dialogue but not recorded.   Jean Kriff (Croquefer) has a couple of low notes that are... imprecise.
I heard a reference to an Offenbach Daphnis et Chloé on a BBC transcription program recently, there's a rarity.   (PS Just found it on uk's amazon, with Pepito, can't spot a label.)
also on Bourg: Lischen et Fritzchen, La Chanson de Fortunio, Barbe-bleue, and Pomme d'Api (also on EMI-CD) - older but I think better than this one.   I'll get to them eventually.

The English Suites from this. Fresh, sprightly and life enhancing

Would you strongly recommend this box set, erato? :) I see it comes quite cheap, and under the VAT limit.

Johann Christian BACH
Sinfonias (for double orchestra) op. 18  nos. 3 & 5  nice separation in the rcording
Sinfonia Concertante in C for flute, oboe, violin & cello
The Little Orchestra of London        Leslie Jones, cond.
James Galway, flute; Derek Wickens, oboe; William Armon, violin; Norman Jones, cello
Excellent jacket notes by Edward Tatnall Canby, and a reminder of how the business has changed in that there's a recommendation of more works from op.18 on a Philips disc.

At least I would! :) And that's coming from someone who dished out Ambroisie's exorbitant full prices for these issues. It was still worth every penny, so this offer is self recommending IMO.

ENESCU:       Symphonie de chambre / Intermèdes opus 12

Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Lawrence Foster

The Symphonie de chambre is the last work of Enescu, and one of his masterpieces. The music is very beautiful, even if the structure of the 4 movements is not easy to follow. The interpretation of Foster is decent, but I would like more tension and contrasts.

The Intermèdes are minor works. They were composed 50 years earlier (!).

Beautiful work, and a fine performance.

No, it is Antoine !  ;)

J.S. Bach
French Suites
English Suites
Notenbuechlein fuer Anna Magdalena

Are you kidding me? Strongly isn't even the word.

The English Suites are fantastic, and they're the weakest part of that set!
The French Suites are super-fantastic (that's a technical term), and
the Notenbuechlein is super-triple-duper fantastic: http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2005/11/harpsichord-like-rarely-ever.html
The sound is phe. no. me. nal. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOvu4VARsao) Rich, lush, blooming like flowers... the playing a dream of rubato and hesitation...

The only recordings that come even close to Rousset's on Ambroise (not those on Decca, which are far tamer) are those of Blandine Ranou. (French, English)

Pity he hasn't done more Bach on Ambroisie, as I would be interested in seeing where this was heading.

It indeed is!

She is very different player than Rousset, languid and sensuous. Her playing reminds me more of young Scott Ross (from the 70s). But you're right, her French suites are really beautiful.

He has a Froberger disc just coming out on Ambroisie. Not a match that would come instantly to my mind, very curious how will it sound.
