This issue is for a recommendation of the first order and that goes for the whole series. Never before a record label attempted top record a complete set of Heinrich Schutz music.
And its artistically a great success, all are agreeing about that. Its amazing that Matteo Messori, assembled so many excellent soloists around him, and that he selected such a acoustically sound place to bring all together. I consider this release as a pearl in the crown of my collection. This is the Fourth disc from this box containing, "Musicalia ad Chorum Sacrum das ist: Geistliche Chor Music opus 11, Dresden, 1648. SWV 369-397 Volume I. Let me name some of those excellent singers;

Gabriela Eibenova, Astrid Werner, Ivana Bilej Broukova, Maciej Gocman, Tobias Hunger, Michael Schaffrath, Walter Testolin.

The recording is a feast in every respect, so much that I will give these 4 volumes already released as a Christmas present to my friends all over the world. Just placed the order at JPC, my delivery girl will have a hard time. ;D

Henk, how do you like the Murail?  I can't believe it came out in 2007 and I haven't heard it yet!

--Bruce

Liked it. Wasn't impressed by the first work, but the the other works I liked better. Have to listen to contemporary music more to be more specific to what I really like.

Prokofiev: Sarcasms, Piano Sonatas Nos. 5 and 6 (Anne-Marie McDermott) - The first disc (recorded in 1997) of a 3-CD re-release of the complete sonatas, and I don't have another set with which to compare.  So far, liking this very much--perhaps a more expressive approach to the composer.  Now listening to No. 6, which Pogorelich did so well.  Might prefer his version, but this is nothing to sneeze at.

I've got one of the three original releases, Bruce;  she's very good!  At some point I'll fetch in the rest.

What the heck...it's been months.  Time to dust off the old gal and take her for a spin!

Tůma, František (1704-1774) - Partite, Sonate e Sinfonie w/ Rinaldo Alessandrini (harpsichord) & Concerto Italiano (period instruments) - love this group - new composer to me, and yet another 18th century 'lost one' from eastern Europe - just outstanding performance & recording - review from Fanfare reprinted HERE:D  P.S. - love the cover!

This CD came in the Buy me please section of Hyperion, and of course I bought it, since I missed Volume II and IV. I gave it a spin today, and was content. The music exceeded expectations, and the sound and performance is superior. The Concerto da Camera is a invigorating work, powerful and scintillating. The Concerto for Violin, piano and Orchestra moved me deeply, like the Czech Rhapsody a very tuneful work. I will in time get Volume IV too.

Another Glossa release that came in today left me breathless too. Giuseppe Sammartini's  Concertos for Organ, opus 9, are wonderful pieces. Played by a authentic ensemble which I did not know, called La Risonanza, with Violinist David Plantier, which is one of the very best authentic violinists around. Fabio Bonizzoni, is directing it as well as plays the organ. The recording sounds more than adequate, and the performance can not be faulted.
