A disc of music that my wife and I both enjoy greatly George.  I just recently picked up the "prequel" disc to this as well (SQ's Op. 32 and Op. 39 Nos. 1 and 2), but the compositions, not the performances, seem to fall short of these later ones.

He's taking Beethoven's cadencas in K.466 to places I never thought possible. Fantastic.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

Joseph Haydn.

Complete String Quartets, Volume IV.

Opus 71 "Apponyi I"

Opus 71, No. 1 in B flat major.
Opus 71, No. 2 in D major.
Opus 71, No. 3 in E flat major.

Buchbinder Quartet.

This is fast becoming my favourite set of Haydn Quartets, and the reason is very simple really. Sound is very good, but what is more important, the performances are superb. These guys play the stars from heaven, so sensitive and well versed they are in this idiom of Haydn, that I think Haydn would be well pleased with it, as I am.
The intro movement of No. 1 "Allegro" makes it abundantly clear, were the train is moving, followed by a expertly done "Adagio" that makes you wonder about the excellence of their playing.
Attention to details is remarkable, and the perfect ease and balance they produce with each other is another strong point of this ensemble. 5 euro's for two cd's, that's a bargain my friends, and than the great quality added, that is a small wonder right? :)

That's not a bargain, it's an almsgiving from the producer. :) Which is it, BTW?

Good morning, my friend!

IMHO, Brilliant Classics is rapidly becoming one of the best labels.

Yes they are, on the same website you will find the Martucci release. Its licensed fro ASV and I ordered it of course although I have two original ASV recordings of his music, but 12,00 euro's for four cd's, well for only two of them that's also a good price.
In volume they are bigger as Naxos already, but their tempo in release has slowed down a bit due to a takeover of the Kruidvat stores in Holland.

BRUCKNER:  3rd Symphony / BPO, Barenboim

A good surprise to me. Barenboim uses the edition of 1877, and shows here a power, a spiritual dimension that he had not in his previous version with Chicago. There are some changes of tempo in the first movement that seem artificial and in other moments - in special in the 4th movement - a certain lack of tension, but in general this is as very good version, the best I know of the edition of 1877 (very superior to Matacic, Haitink or Celibidache).
To me Knappertsbusch with the VPO is the best interpreter of this work, but he uses a different edition.

Do you mean that Kruidvat is no more? What a pitty!
