The more I listen, the more the dry recorded sound annoys me. I don't mind analytical, nor do I want it swamped in ambience, but this just sounds hard-going.

Too bad! I've got a nicely gemütlich reading by the Boston Chamber Players (local boys, and all).

The Bartok Divertimento may just be my favorite Bartok piece, and I've only heard it once, and it was 3 or 4 months ago.  I thought it was flat out super fantastic.  Below the green lemon Bartok, to be sure.  8)

Heck yeah!  And I have to thank MI for introducing me to the work.  It's great. :)

Edit: ok, I'm switching to the Takács recording for the rest of No.14 - Hyperion knows how to record chamber music.

I listened to the Mosaïques for the first time on the Mozart string quartets. It was a great experience and I immediately searched for more of their discs. I found their Haydn Op. 20 and I considered that set dazzling. Unfortunately since then I have never gotten the same feeling of epiphany with this ensemble, although I have purchased almost every disc recorded by them (although in Haydn they are not guilty because I simply fell in love with the Festetics). And I think that Schubert is one of their weakest discs, even from the perspective of the sound quality.

P.S.: Lethe, you would love the Leipziger Streichquartett.  :)

Bought this on a whim, never heard Alfven before.  Charming music, easy on the ear and one of those buys which makes one feel 'I've been missin' out'

Very enjoyable  :)

Perlman Rediscovered (Itzhak Perlman, violin / David Garvey, piano) - From comments by Amazon staff writer Leslie Gerber:

"While mining its archives, RCA has hit paydirt with this one: a full-length LP recital by Itzhak Perlman recorded in 1965 and--except for one item--never before released. Someone at RCA had decided that this wasn't the right program for the label to introduce a new violinist, and then, apparently, it just got forgotten."

I really like the Auvidis Schubert recording by the Mosaïques, and the Laborie was one of my most-awaited discs - but the sound is a world apart. I'm definitely intrigued by the Leipzigs, given how often they get mentioned. At the moment my go-to late Schubert performers are the Panochas and Lindsays, which I suspect could leave many other avenues to be explored (the Italians, Alban Berg quartet and Emersons never seem to beckon me after my initial listens).

Very good set indeed! And definitely some wonderful music there. I bought this before it came to Brilliant, and very worthwhile purchase it was!

... but on re-listening I'm not so enthusiastic about it. Beautiful moments, but also many that don't work so well.

(Ghindin, Ponti, Groslot)

Edit: As nice as the Ghindin is as horrible is Ponti, banging & an unbearable piano sound.

The Tchaikovsky is a piece that really ought to be included in the top chamber music game, but that could be said for many others too :( In hindsight I should've picked it over one of my other choices.

I see this disc every time at my local bookstore which carries a fairly decent classical music section.  However, the reason I think no one is buying it is they have it ridiculously priced high.  >:D

As a direct result of the discussion of George Onslow over in the Name that piece! topic I'm listening (via Naxos Music Library) to this recording of two of the 4 hand piano sonatas:

Worth a listen. I'm actually listening to the first sonata a second time!

Nope, it was a Rattle recording. :) One of his better Mahler recordings for sure.
