Now playing the following CD, another historical recording with Benno Moiseiwitsch for a first listen.  The recording was again reconstructed/ remastered by Ward Marston, who did a stellar job IMO.  I almost cannot believe the recording was originally made in 1945 ...

Skipped ahead to disc three to hear Giulini's Dvorak 8.  Superb!  The paired Pictures at an Exhibition is so good it almost makes me like the orchestral version.

A great disc, and a favorite Haydn disc for me for what, a decade now.  It only gets better with time.

Listening to Symphony No. 5. My favorite Parry symphony.

EDIT: listening to this in relation to a clean-up of my collection. Relistening confirmed my previous reservations on the originality of the music and the so-so performance - mainly the soloists.

Anyone willing to cover my costs of mailing it, is welcome to it! :) Just PM me.
(wouldn't recommend outside of Europe, considering the rates of Dutch postal services)

But knowing communist skills for successful commercial strategies,  :) I tend to think that recordings from East Germany never were widely available out of the Iron Curtain, excepting - I guess - when it was pursued a propagandistic goal.

It was difficult to get hold of the complete Eterna catalogue, but this was true of many French (e.g. Erato) and West German (e.g. Eurodisc) labels too. This may partly reflect the import policy in my country at the time, but my point is, that much Eterna was not that difficuly to find.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

When I picked up Giulini in America II, I figured I might as well get his Vienna Brahms cycle on Newton Classics, too.  (His EMI Dvorak, too, for that matter.)  Listened to the First and Second yesterday and today, and while I like the LAPO recordings a bit more, these are both top flight recordings of the symphonies.
