Is this only choral music? Is the type of thing you can listen to all in a row, or do you think some breaks are needed (I am thinking here on each disc, not 5 discs in a row, which I wouldn't do)? JPC has only samples from one of the discs, so I am not sure how representative it is.  And how are the rest of the sets in the series?

Yes Neal only his choral music, and yes you can listen to it in one go, such are the delights of the performance and the quality of the music. Breaks are not needed, at least not in my case, its so very organic that it will prompt you to listen continuously. The whole series is of a even high quality, this set is as representative as the others, and so I urge you to pick it up. There are other performances of Schutz's music, not necessarily  better, but different. I do not think contrary to Erato's opinion, that you need other performances, these will give you all what you need in the music. Enjoy.

Thanks Harry and Erato. I've seen these posted before, but never seemed to focus in on them for whatever reason. They remind me a bit of Monteverdi in the samples, and they do sound good even in the samples. I will investigate these sets with interest.

Herzlich lieb hab ich O Herr, with this aria the fifth disc is beginning of the Schutz box, and how fine a beginning especially if it is sung with such well paced passion. The German sentence could be equally well fitted on the love of your life! But its a prelude to my favourite aria on this disc "Das ist je gewischlich wahr" so well sung that it is on repeat. The whole box breaths the stamp of authority, and you hear ample reasons for this statement. Well recorded too.
A series I could not do without. Its a no brainer.....buy it, all of them! :D

First listen of this highly impressive composer. this is a work of great beauty, and imbued with a emotional weight that overwhelms and delights. This talented composer was completely forgotten, although every conductor said at the time of his dead in 1985, that Italian conducting came at a end with him. Be this as it may, a composer that wrote a lot for now famous films, has with the present work a winner in every respect. This work combines all the genius of his rare talent in a dramatic work that shocks, and gives a insight into what he was capable of writing. The performance does justice to this complex score, and the recording is rather good too. These are world première recordings.

Giovanni Paisiello.

Complete Piano concertos, Volume I.

Pietro Spada, Piano forte.
Orchestra da Camera di Santa Cecilia.
Licensed from Arts production.
Recorded 1989-1992

Concerto no, 1-8.

This is the first instalment of the complete piano concertos recorded by Arts productions and licensed by Brilliant. I am delighted they took up challenge and released for a very low price these fine concerti. Paisiello was the most important Italian composer of the late 18th century, on par with say Haydn, and even foreshadowed certain aspects of Beethoven. Listening to these concerti he must have been a outstanding performer himself, for these concerti are far from simple works. He wrote no less than 94 operas, but non of that output interest me, but these concerti are a small marvel to me. Melodious with enough weight to make quite a impression. The performances are excellent as is the very intimate recording, with a fine sounding piano forte. Recommended on all counts.

Very impressed indeed with this recent purchase (thanks to Luke for the recommendation):

I suppose one could argue that for the last 30-odd years Bryars has been writing the same piece over and over again, but if so this disc contains the best iterations of it that I've heard.
