Yes, Ciccolini is excellent and probably, if such a thing existed, he should be considered like a sort of canonical interpreter of Satie. That said, my personal preference is de Leeuw. :)

De Leeuw is also my favourite, although the last listening was quite a while ago.

Classic indeed...I first heard it at my high school girlfriend's house in 1966. Still a favorite even if she isn't  :D

I have Thibaudet, Ciccolini and Leeuw. Probably the best overall, considering sensitive interpretation plus sonics, is Thibaudet. It's the one I feel most comfortable recommending; the one that won't disappoint.

However, Leeuw is so deeply personal and strange, it has become my favorite (when I play it for friends they seem puzzled though  ;D ) If you can find Luke's thoughts on the set, read.

Ciccolini...well, without a shred of evidence or anything to rationally support my opinion, I believe Satie would endorse it completely. It just seems right....straightforward, unpretentious, and right.

MI, buy all three  ;)

Thanks for your help even if you made the decision that much tougher. ;) :D

A great disk - seeing this prompted me to play this one, by my favourite alternative group, Trio Mediaeval

Listening to the Cello Concerto. Du Pre is still unmatched in this concerto. She made this concerto her own.

This is probably a subset of the following supra-set, which I bought a few months ago ...

mark me down for another Bartok

Concerto for 2 Pianos, Percussion and Orchestra.  Concertgebouw, Zinman cond.  Pianos: Friere and Argerich.  Percussion: Labordus and Pustjens.

from the DG Argerich 4 box.

I also have the Boulez recording of this work, but hearing it tonight I noticed for the first time that there's a strong resemblance (strong enough to sound almost like a direct quote at times) between part of the third movement and my favorite passage from Shostakovich's Symphony 14--the rather cheerful xylophone that figures prominently in (IIRC) Les Attentives.

I'm normally not a big Berlioz fan, but this is darned good...
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

You just reminded me that I should give the SACD layer on this disc a listen one of these days.  I bought this SACD a half-dozen years ago, before I finally got an SACD-capable player last year ...

Maybe, I don't know what the contents of the big Elgar box are, but EMI has a lot of Elgar to pull from. I usually stay away from those really big boxes, because I think a majority of them are just too cheaply done IMHO. Not only that, but I usually already own most of what's in it anyway. :)

I have so far listened to only one CD, the SQ is actually quite good.  The CD's included in this box are mainly older recordings by Barbirolli and Boult.

Yes - EMI have issued this performance in a number of boxes - the Elgar edition and the du Pre complete recordings for example.  Interestingly, the Barbirolli box set from EMI has Andre Navarra's version of the Elgar Cello.

There is another du Pre/Barbirolli edition of the Elgar concerto - a BBC version (released on Testament) of a later, live performance in Prague with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
