Back to the following box and now playing CD4 - all Bach program with Keith Jarrett on the harpsichord (a scary thought from a jazz pianist?) for a first listen ...

CD4 is actually the same as the following CD, which has been in my Bach collection for a few years ...

Funny... I was just listening to this last night:

[asin]B00000E6CJ[/asin]
(Vivaldi 4 seasons played by recorder)

nowhere near as bad as I was expecting... quite pleasant actually.

We also listened to this last night:

(Liszt Lieder- Fischer-Dieskau & Barenboim)

which was a bit disappointing. I know many of the songs are in German, but there's no need to go so over the top with the German sibilants, it's quite an ugly sound. Fischer-Dieskau is a bit over the top on this CD for me, it's like the equivalent of really bad Shakespearean acting. Especially on the opening track- 'O lieb, so lang du lieben kanst', which is normally a beautiful song.
Also, Barenboim's playing is really dull. I know there aren't many notes but this music needs to be played with an open heart, and there is absolutely no magic or heart in the piano playing.

A real shame, as I was really hoping it would complement one of my favourite CDs of all time:

His works for orchestra are sonic marvels. The orchestration, the harmonic tension in the music, and those great melodies make Respighi a favorite of mine. I'm heading into a Respighi phase myself...

I gave the Rachmaninov Études-tableaux orchestrated by Respighi a spin yesterday:

very nicely done. Not the most dynamic interpretation on this CD, I have to use my ears to hear what a really terrific performance would sound like.

Daverz

Haydn: String Quartet Op. 71, No. 2

I much prefer the warmer playing of the Festetics.  And the Buchberger interpretation is a too plain.  I have to say that I'm not really enjoying their complete set of the quartets.

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 13 In Bb Minor, Op. 113, "Babi Yar"

Symphony No. 13 from the Barshai set playing now - I found this one of Shostakovich's more challenging works to listen to at first because of the Bass singing but I quite like it now. As before Barshai and his performers put in a good performance!.

Hopefully one day John will find himself so completely engrossed in Mahler's music that he will become as obsessed as we are!

I forgot to ask you before, do you usually listen only to Respighi's orchestral works, or maybe the operas and the ballets too? As you like Belkis, Queen of Sheba.......

I haven't heard any of Respighi's operas and I have yet to hear his ballets, which hopefully soon I will remedy. Belkis, Queen of Sheba is just an amazing work. I'm about to revisit the Piano Concerto, which I recall being quite nice.

Cobos-Lopez has done a good one on Telarc with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra that you may want to check out.
