In the week ending Saturday, 08 SEP 2007, I listened to the following:

1. 10/10 Bach, J.S.: Transcriptions of 8 concerti by Couperin, Johann ernst, Fasch, Telemann & Vivaldi for organ (71:03)--Peter van Dijk, organ--hanssler CD, Vol. 95 of CBE.

2, 3. 10/10 Telemann: Tafelmusik, CD 1 (69:48 ) & CD 2 (58:33)--Musica Amphon, Pieter-Jan, Belder, cond.--of 4 CD Brilliant set.

4,5,6. !0/10 Shostakovich--String Quartets 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15--Shostakovich Quartet. Quartets 12, 13, & 14 are on one CD, and the others are in a twofer with the single digit quartets on 1 CD and the double digit quartets on the other--Regis CDs, lic from Olympia. I hate to differ with hangos, but I find these to be the finest performances I have every heard of every one of the quartets, both as to performance and sound quality, with one exception as to performance--# 15. This performance does not have quite the pall, the smell of death hanging over it that the great performances have. The great performances are those of the Borodin (but with inferior sound), the St Petersburg, in modern sound; and then there is an LP I have that as far as I know was never issued on CD, by the Tanayev Quartet. Lots of other good ones, too, like the Manhattan Quartet.
"Don't drink and drive; you might spill it."--J. Eugene Baker, aka my late father.

Amazing, that Michelangeli at 65 could play with such intensity.

Unless a person is ill, 65 is still young. Just listen to some of Richter's recordings at 65.

Villa-Lobos - 12 Etudes for guitar (Ramirez/Denon)

The Ballade too I am sure, although I'm not sure if that is the same one I have.

The Ballade I have in that set is #1, recorded in Bregenz, March 1985.

And in case of Rubinstein that is considered as early, wee spry of a lad

I began this morning's music session with Bach's Cello Suites performed by Fournier (1959 set). Nice, contemplative music for early Sunday. How does his DG set compare to this CD?

Then I started a small Brahms Symphony 1 survey with the Karajan/BPO from the 60's. I loved this one, and I liked it more than his 2nd and 3rd from the same period. Lush orchestral playing, enough thrust and some beautiful woodwind thrown in.

Sure, but I wouldn't call 65 young. Maybe 35, even 45, but not 65.  :-\

I think Sidoze meant that quite a few pianists are still in their prime as a performer at 65.
Things are a bit different with string players however.

That is something I cannot disagree with.  :)

Just received the CD above (and inserted a pic of a natural horn into Que's post) - purchased 'used' from the Amazon Marketplace - couple of fingerprints but played just fine!

This is an outstanding disc - early Haydn & mainly 'chamber' pieces using one to four horns - Ab Koster is the primary hornist (is that a word?); as usual, L'Archibudelli performs brilliantly and the sound recording is the exemplary (typical for Sony w/ this group).  Koster is just superb and the horn is really up front and heard quite well; in fact, quite hard to believe he can play that thing!  ;D

Highly recommended - thanks Q - now need to look for some more 'natural horn' discs!  :D

Yep that's what I meant

Chopin's 3rd sonata - Dino Ciani - live 1970 - some beautiful moments in the trio of the scherzo and largo. A hell of a lot better than the way overrated classic Argerich recording (to say nothing of Lipatti)

Schumann sonata 2 - Maria Tipo - live '68 - she was a firebrand as a youngster, still with that poetic quality of her later playing. excellent performance.
