It really is atmospheric this music from Alfven. Especially the first Rhapsody (Midsummer Vigil) is beautiful. The third Rahpsody (Dalecarlian Rhapsody) I also liked a lot. I general, how does Jarvi's performances compare to Westergard in this music?

Mengelberg's style suits Tchaikovsky very well for my taste. Has anybody here heard his performances of the 4th and 6th symphony?

Thought so myself - Tchaikovsky & Mengelberg is an excellent combination. Better IMO than Koussevitsky or Stokowski. The 4th and the 6th are great as well.

Morning, all!

Tippett, Triple Concerto (for Violin, Viola, Cello) (Tippett - BBC Philharmonic/Nimbus)

Ravishingly beautiful work (but not in a singalong way). Wonderful sonorities.

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. -- Plato

No music for 4 days as I go on lecturing in Inner Monglolia and a couple of other places. Finally got back and I put a CD on within the first minute. It happens to be:

Tuur: Cello Concerto

To be followed by:
Brahms and Mahler: Piano Quartets

SHOSTAKOVICH:     Piano Concerto n. 1 / Concertino / Piano Quintet

/ Martha Argerich, Lugano Festival 2006  (EMI)

The version of the first concerto is the best I heard with the remarkable trumpet of Sergei Nakariakov.

The Quintet, with Argerich, Capuçon, Maisky and others is very good, but I prefer the version of Richter and the Borodin Quartet, more powerful and intense.

Renfield

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9, from the Jochum/Dresden Staatskapelle cycle on EMI.

Even though I don't often revisit Jochum's Bruckner (in either of its integral incarnations), I have to say this is quite good. 8)

This one again, find it to be a very entertaining cd, with music well above the usual level of excellence.
Good morning to you all!

A composer about whom I have written a lot, and find his music akin, to my temperament and inclination.
His orchestral writing is flawless, and his emotions somber and deep, tragic and tormented, a lonely soul amidst the turmoil of life.

Pearl for the 4th & 5th. But I have my eye on the Opus Kura issues, seem to me the best option these days. On line samples sounded like the usual Opus Kura excellence. The Pearl transfers are good but dated.
I avoid buying M&A : not bad, but not entirely satisfactory either - at least in my experience so far. Too much tinkering for my taste. And not always good (original) source material.
