Stravinsky, Agon with Tilson Thomas and the LSO.  This is on an RCA disc entitled Stravinsky in America.  A wonderful recording of one of Stravinsky's most beautiful late works.

Dancing Divertimentian

Bartok's violin sonata. Argerich and Kremer bring such liveliness and color to this score. Zesty!

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

CORREA DE ARAUXO:      Libro de Tientos (1626)          / Bernard Foccroulle   (RICERCAR)

A splendid anthology of one of the greatest masterpieces of the Spanish organ. The CD includes the sublime Canto Llano de la Immaculada Concepcion, the last piece of the Libro, and the beautiful Salve Regina of Diego Ortiz, played by La Capella Sancti Michaelis conducted by Erik van Nevel.

The new erato

What to me is another essential purchase concerning baroque, pre-classical music, is this indispensable ZigZag recording.
A must have! For the music and talent that comes together here is nothing short of amazing. And most of the composers that are unknown,  will deliver music that will gladden your heart no end. Beautiful recording, and excellent performances. Budget priced 6,00 euros, excellent documentation and lay-out.

What disc is that Harry? For some reason, this particular picture doesn't display on my compute.

Wow, they have raised the price since then, or they made a mistake when I ordered it, for I paid 6 euro's for it.
Cross my heart!

I have just listened to Niels Viggo Bentzon - Symphony 7 'De Tre Versioner' - Aarhus SO - Ole Schmidt. I have never heard a work by Bentzon that I have not enjoyed but few that I go back and listen to often. The 7th is one of the few that I think of as first rate.

Have you tried his "Tempererede Klaver"? Consisting of several books of Preludes and Fugues in all modes. I once heard him perform book One at a recital. Very imaginative and entertaining music, like a mixture of Bach, Hindemith and Satie.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Beethoven: Hammerklavier Sonata (no 29). Anton Kuerti, piano  (Analekta). I very seldom listen to this work (which I love), but this version has claims to be as good a try on it as any I've heard (admittedly not that many). It's forthright, concentrated, lyrical and searching. Vienna-born and trained, Kuerti's pianism reminds me of Serkin's: unfettered, concerned about structure vs the moment. He correctly realizes that Beethoven's lyrical moments are not about beauty of sound, but beauty of line. A very satisfying reading.

Not to long ago I bought at JPC 8 ZigZag cd's, for what I thought was 6,00 euros. I've got them for that price. Two days later is was corrected to 19,95. So basically I was lucky, I guess.
This cd is one of them.

Mattio Rampollini. (1497-1517)
Due Canzoni del Petrarca.
Ensemble Poiesis, <Marion Fourquier>.

And I love it, old vocal music, based on Petrarca's writings, of which I am for the obvious reasons a great admirer.
This is in my ears a winner, both in performance and recording, and I am glad that I bought it for so little money.

Hey Luke - I know the top and bottom two of those ECM cds but the middle two are new to me. What can you say about them - are they worth knowing?

I must say that I find both his 3rd and 4th symphonies exceptionally fine works, imaginative, purposeful, very well-written! I was less taken by the 8th Symphony 'Sinfonia Discrezione'(Classico label).
