Kullervo

How was the response?  Was it what you anticipated?

I'm not sure I anticipated anything, but the response was good — especially for the Nørgård and Stravinsky pieces. It seemed a bit more difficult for him to hold his concentration during the Boulez and Nielsen. I sometimes forget that one of the most difficult things about cultivating a love of classical music is building up a certain level of patience that allows one to sit through upwards of an hour of music.

That's pretty cool. I don't think I have any friends who'd really want to sit down and listen to any classical.

But yeah, 4 different pieces might've been overload.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.

This "Spirit of Gambo", what does it refer to?

To a set of music in this compilation , named by Hume, Andrei.

EDIT:  On relistening after quite a while, I still feel this is a superb Pastorale.
On par with Erich Kleiber/RCO and Kletzki/CzPhO.

Thanks. Is it some story behind the music, or what?

Not really a story behind, no....
Hume saw this set of Gamba pieces as his personal testament.
He was a rather rude and mercenary guy, declared mad by his compeers, Hume, offended John Dowland, by declaring the Lute outdated!

As do I, especially 3 and 4.

Just finished listening to the Mozart G minor

...sort of a palate cleanser between Bax symphonies. Moving on to this now:
