Is it? Anyhow: I own a copy too, but never took much notice of it. Klezmer, errrr, well, Klezmer.  ::) Must be fun to make it. 8)

I played for years in a Klezmer band, so yes its fun my friend.
Good thing you have a copy, take good care of it. A friend of mine paid 150 $ for it 2 weeks ago.

And for good measure, standing on one leg isn't everything, so this one again before I rest my head on a pillow, that will lead me to Greece, where many a happy year I spend.

Took this out of my collection because someone was nagging me about it, saying it was so beautiful. So, the last time I listen to it was July 1999, and my listening notes are very clear. Nice entertaining music, which you can play while being occupied with your girlfriend, or something else of course. ;D
;D ;D

Schumann: Symphony No. 2 (Bernstein/NYPO)
Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life. - Ludwig van Beethoven

J.Z. Herrenberg

Fitelberg, Noseda, Tortelier, Kord, Stryja - worthy contenders. But they don't match Jerzy Salwarowski. [Still have to listen to the Wit on Naxos, though...]

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. -- Plato

Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5 (Davis/Staatskapelle Dresden)

One result of today's listening . . . .

Reading the thread on Mutter, I felt the need to listen this great recording. She was really a fantastic young violinist.

Nice gesture. Gisberta Brandeveld is also thinking of him... (I know her well)

We've got that one, too; excellent recording.

(As you know) I just got that set last week, and I fully agree. For me - these are the definitive Karlowicz performances, absolutely peerless. But I have yet to listen to Wit, so who knows? ;D

Here's the more recent cover, which appears to be unavailable in decent size:

Harry - out of curiosity, what instrument(s) did you play?  :)

I have a handful of Klezmer or Klezmer-derived music, including a number of Andy Statman discs (one shown below); clarinetist who mixes jazz w/ Yiddish roots - I'd suggest listening to some snippets on Amazon or elsewhere, if not familiar w/ this sound.  Another one of interest is w/ Itzhak Perlman , also below - he apparently loves playing this music -  :D

SonicMan, I see the Klezmatics billed on the disc to the right - a superb group! I recommend the groovy, light-hearted take on klezmer by a band from ChamberNut's hometown, Winnipeg: Finjan. Their album Crossing Selkirk Avenue is a pure delight, adding to the usual klezmer mix some interesting dashes of other styles, like jazz, Greek and Turkish folk music, bluegrass, and even comedy!

Brian - thanks for the recommendation above - will put on my non-classical wish list (or is this classical music?) -  ;)  Dave

For those who might be interested in this music and in addition to some other Statman discs, I can recommend the other two that I own:

ChamberNut

Dvorak

String Quartet No. 13 in G major, Op. 106

Panocha Quartet
Supraphon

Dancing Divertimentian

Not the most dramatic cantatas Bach ever wrote but in their quiet reflectiveness all is right in the world.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach
