Mozart 39, 40 & 41, seeing if I can don ye olde Sherlock Holmes hat & see what Harnoncourt is on about.  Currently listening to Karl Bohm with the Concertgebouw, 1955, on Archipel.  SQ is quite good, although track 3 had a skip, and the CD is new :(

Mahler 5, Sinopoli/Philharmonia  -- I've made a couple of favorable postings about this cycle lately on Bill's "Mahlerly Challenged" thread.  My first hearing of the 5th and I like it.  A bit weird but I dig it--especially the first movement funeral march that sounds like the soundtrack to the Godfather, the way the brass comes out smoking in the 2nd, and the 5th is like Mahler meets Copland and they drop acid and co-write music for a Fellini film.  It ain't your grandma's Mahler 5, that's fer shure!

Yeah, I know, but I got it from BRO for about the cost of an order of French fries, so I figured it was worth a shot.  I actually have several of their CDs which have been pretty good -- Scherchen's and Mengelberg's Beethoven, some old Bruckner, I forget what all.  But yes, it's a roll of the dice.

Up next, some shorter orchestral works and, if I'm ready for it, the First Symphony. The Rome Symphony Orchestra and conductor Francesco La Vecchia are joined by pianist Gesualdo Coggi.

Sometimes you get lucky because they just copy stuff from another label that knows what they are doing.  I think I have a Stokowski Wagner set like that.

Good morning all!

Today I ventured towards the last discs from the Haydn Baryton Trios, and reached Volume XX, that contains the Divertimento's for Eight Instruments, Hoboken X: 1,2,5,6, which the Esterhazy's play together with the Piccolo Concerto-Wien, and well they blend together. But what is surprising me more is that, despite the avalanche of compositions, there is never a faltering in quality, neither in performance or recording. And other groups will be hard pressed to get this better as the present set. For me at least this is quite definitive. I will of course start anew with playing all of them right away, of course I will.
