sorely disappointed by Stravinsky's readings of Petrouchka and Rite of Spring. While I found many virtues to the lesser known ballets I heard him conduct (on disc of course), these ultra-familiar scores came out as alternately aggressive and charmless (Petrouchka) and tepid and frankly dull (Rite). I was particularly diappointed at the lack of understanding Stravinsky the conductor seems to have for the coloristic potential at his disposal.

At least part of your problem might be that it is the case of late Stravinsky conducting early Stravinsky. Different time, changed views and priorities.

Welcome back too! The forum has been less informed without you.

np: Kancheli - Symphony Nos. 4 & 5

Pretty much the only music I know that could be considered scary in its implications. Weird how burnt-out this composer got - his most essential music could almost be contained on one CD (and would probably include symphonies 5 and 6).

Thank you, will try my best.

Listening to BBC 3 CD review, comparison of various recordings of Schoenberg's Pelleas und Melisande.

Good to have you back, Drasko.

A little kick of modern here. Hagen Quartett have been playing Ligeti's SQ #1 and Lutoslawski's SQ.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

I agree it really is. Apart from the solo cd with Robin blaze, which I heartily dislike, I have all volume till now. 42 me thinks, is the last one I bought.

It's sad to see you lagging like this, Harry. :(

Listened to Gould playing Bach earlier; I put the CD in for the Italian Concerto, but also listened to the other works on it (Partita #4 and Toccata in E minor, BWV 914) and the groaning that accompanied all.

Which CD is it, which contains both these works? (BWV 971 and 828 )

Thanks. :)
I got the disc (or rather the files from my server) out. I'll save the videos for later.

More Haydn. It's that time of the month. And I've loved the Minetti Quartet
in the performances I've heard of them live. Haenssler picked up a group
with great potential here!

Wow. I knew these kids were good, but their Haydn CD really knocks my socks off. Easily the best single Haydn SQ4t selection to have come my way since the Quatuor Ebene and Jerusalem Quartets. The kind that makes you happy, listening to CDs.

(Compared to that, the Buchberger's opp.54/55 is rather a straight read-through.)
