Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone!

Bruckner

Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major "Romantische"

Jochum / SKD

Finally, a Bruckner symphony that I enjoyed from the beginning to end. Actually, "enjoyed" is an understatement: it was an exhilarating experience to wallow in such a profoundly beautiful and moving music and the perfect sonic of the recording was very helpful in this respect.

Definitely one of the greatest symphonies ever written.

So, maybe there's still hope foir me.   8)

Too kind.

This shattering performance of the 6th seems to have been reissued on the second disc, if anybody wants to click and read the rather praising reviews.

I suspect you will have the same reaction to nos.8 and 9, both formally very strong as well as immediately appealing. The ones in between should not discourage you if you do not immediately enjoy them, and though some have a problem with the finale of the 7th, it is no more troublesome than anything in the 4th.

Thanks for the encouragement. There's still a long way to go until 8 and 9, since I suspect I'll have the Fourth in repeat mode these days. :)

Thread duty:

Joachim Raff

Piano Concerto in C minor op. 185

Michael Ponti, Richard Kapp / Hamburg Symphony Orchestra

;D

I've never heard any of those concerts before and I was enjoying each and every one immensely. There's so much more in the piano repertoire than the warhorses...

Wow! It certainly was a fascinating lineup. I'm not sure if I've heard a single one of them! :o

[EDIT: And not the Raff either. ;D]

You're welcome. Actually I had no idea Flotow or Sgambati did write a piano concerto until getting there.  :D

Now for variation:

Joachim Raff

Violin Concerto No. 1 in B minor op. 161

Tobias Ringborg, Andrea Quinn / Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera

An excellent new discovery --- thank you Gurn for recommending it on your most excellent thread:

Giovanni Paisiello

Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor

Pietro Spada / Chamber Orchestra of Santa Cecilia

This will be an extra layer of work - convert the CD to flac files before transferring the flac files over to the MPX player.  BTW, I thought I saw MP4 mentioned somewhere, what is the deal here?

Yeah but it's faster to do cd->flac than any other format, flac encoder is so fast it's ridiculous! 8)

Oh thread duty: Mahler's 4th last night from the Bernstein set, before it was nothing but the Carter cd (Boston Concerto, Dialogues, Cello Concerto, ASKO Concerto) on repeat.  This morning though I kicked it off with MacDowell's Piano Concerto #2. :)

Do you use EAC or XLD? I understand that these two programs get the most accurate rips. I use XLD and though it can take awhile if the CD has marks on it, I always get great rips. Unfortunately, XLD can be a little picky and I occasionally need to change the settings to get a rip, but I prefer this, as I know it is confirming any suspicious data.

I use EAC exclusively, I go for accurate results and it only takes a few minutes for it to rip the cd. :)

Also prompted by Gurn's thread:

Joseph Wölfl

Piano Concerto No.5 in C-major, Op.43 "Grand Concert Militare "

Perhaps, after Bruckner's 8th, 9th, 7th and 5th  ;D ;)

Happy to hear you had a good experience with the 4th.  First three movements are terrific.  I'm not as keen on the Finale of this one.  The Adagio was the first piece of Bruckner's music I had ever heard.  :)

Just finished playing CD2 from this set, an excellent set that should have been released sooner ...

Looks sweet!  What instrument(s)/location(s)?

XLD is supposedly the EAC equivalent for MAC. It takes a bit longer than a few minutes, often taking 10-15 minutes if the disc is long or scratched, but I don't currently have a need for it to go faster.
