STRAVINSKY:           Petrushka                 / New York Philharmonic, Pierre Boulez (1971)

To me, the best version of this wonderful masterpiece. Powerful, dynamic and with an extraordinary sense of the colour. The quality of the recording his very good and the NYP is splendid.

The new erato

... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

An amazing live performance. Makes me want to move to England and subscribe to the Philharmonia year-round. Also makes me wish somebody would give Sir Charles Mackerras and the orchestra of his choice a recording studio and all the salary they needed to just spend three or four months recording whatever they wanted to play.
