Dave, this set is also on my list, so if possible, could you give me some comments, in terms of playing, sound, and tempi.
RE: Boccherini Cello Sonatas w/ Luigi Puxeddu

Harry - I'll make some comments in Gurn's Classical Thread - please check there; much to say, which will get quickly buried in this 'fast moving' super highway!  ;D  Dave

Oh yeah, one of my all-time favorites. Not to mention Karajan here- one of his "almost scary" good recordings.  :o

A most excellent recording of some stunningly beautiful music.

Telemann.
3 Orchestral Suites.
Overture TWV 55:Es 2 for Flute Pastorelle & Strings & BC.
Overture TWV 55:F 14 for 2 Oboes, Strings & BC.
Overture TWV 55:a 2 for Recorder, Strings, & BC.

L'Orfeo Barockorchester, Carin van Heerden.
Recorded 2006.

This CD came as a add on with the catalogue from CPO, only costing 1,99. Don't let this pass you by, for its a wonderful recording, and the CPO catalogue will make you very greedy indeed, another reason for adding this to your basket.
But joking apart, the overtures played here, are done with great taste and musicianship. Well defined orchestral playing, with a clear and lucid path cut out by this for me unknown conductor Carin van Heerden. She does a great job with this HIP ensemble, and sounds like it.
Excellent recording.
Recommended.

I am enduring through this recording. It is quite uninspiring so far.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

ENESCU:   3rd Sonata for violin/piano               / Ida Haendel, Vladimir Ashkenazy

The work is a great masterpiece: under traditional forms, like the sonata-form of the first movement, there is the spirit of the improvisation. It may seem contradictory, but I would say, a very deeply organized improvisation.
Ida Haendel played this Sonata in front of Enescu and received his applause. I cannot imagine a better version. Even Ashkenazy seems transfigured by the extraordinary performance of the violinist.

Good morning. :)
Oh yeah!  Those are quickly becoming some of my favourite sacred pieces.  Do you know how Niquet's set compares to Rousset's, Que?  I've seen high praise for the latter.

Antonin Dvorak.
Symphony No. 5 in F major, opus 76.
Czech PO, Jiri Belohlavek.
Recorded in 1992.

A melodious and very rewarding Symphony. It is well crafted, and shows how deep Dvorak's understanding of orchestral colors is. He simply paints magic on the canvas, and so creates a waterfall of highly enjoyable notes.
The performance is a tad blank, and uninvolved, but at least it is done with taste. The recordings are slightly better as the ones under Jarvi.
It needs a deep understanding of Dvorak's music to bring it of, and my thought is that this conductor doesn't really understand the dynamics. He frequently overplays the accents with too loud playing, and thereby missing a lot of the secondary action, that is really necessary to hear. And the orchestra also runs a little bit on automatic pilot. So altogether, one has to go back to Kubelik to understand there is much more under the surface as Belohlavek lets us hear. Its serviceable.
