VILLA-LOBOS:   Symphony no. 10, "Amerindia"           / SWR Orchestra, Carl St. Clair

A powerful work, but too long and emphatic, in special in the last movement. It doesn't seem to me to be one of Villa Lobos best works.
This said, this Symphony - that includes a Choir and three vocal soloists- has very beautiful moments. The 4th movement, Largo, seems the most inspired moment of the work.

Unfortunately, I have also noticed that my Brilliant Classics copy (never listened to before) is defective at the very beginning of the violin concerto. Does anyone else have the same problem?  :(

Antoine, haven't noticed anything wrong with my copy.  :(

Thanks.

It´s better so. I asked because frequently this kind of problems affect complete batches of discs.  :)

Today I had the afternoon off from renovating my bathroom, and I can listen well into the evening, because my wife is off too, for a while, hey, in a good sense. ;D
I so missed my music after a week of abstinence, it almost finished me.
The first two CD'S I listen too.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, CD 2 of his complete harpsichord concertos. This set is a gem, well performed and recorded, with some very interesting music on it. The Concerto in E flat for 2 Harpsichords is a bit of a oddity, in the sense that the score asks for extra wind and brass, which is nice of course, but I have the idea that the conductor assembled the musicians on the street, put them together and said, now play this concerto, which they did, and it sounds like that. Strings are okay, but the rest made me giggle for a long time. Lots of fun though.

Another first listen was a CD with works of Branco, the third installment on Naxos, and a very successful one I may add. I simply adored and admire The Death of Manfred, written for strings only, it impressed me mightily, and moved me too. A world premiere! The third Symphony is gorgeous as is the Alentejana suite No. 2, very well performed and recorded by Phil Rowlands, needless to say its a stunning orchestral image.
