The entry on the label website : http://www.etcetera-records.com/index.php?124

Looks like i have picked an odd one then  ;D

I might use one of my remaining emusic credit to get a string orchestra version in this case.

This is a great sextet version, papy: :)

Congratulations!  I trust it will mean "More Listening Time."

Hi Bruce - thanks for the congrats!  :D

Certainly will provide me MUCH MORE listening time, and likely more on the headphones to save Harpo's sanity!  ;) ;D

Plan to do some more of my hobbies, esp. woodworking and likely more traveling - may come back to see you in the Big Apple next summer or fall!  Dave  8)

After a third listen these have finally opened up to me. Neoclassical, angular with some interesting harmonies that remind me of Hindemith.

Well, hope so!  Ideally, there would be a concert or two in the offing (e.g., Lincoln Center Festival, Mostly Mozart, etc.).

Now listening to:

Enescu: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 (Dutoit/Verbier Festival Orchestra, live concert archived on Medici.tv) - Spirited, with some excellent playing by the young Verbier players.

Villa-Lobos: Piano Trio No. 3, W 142
Villa-Lobos: Cello Sonata No. 2, W 103
Villa-Lobos: Piano Trio No. 2, W 105

Pretty easy listening these - Nice :).

Seconded with extreme prejudice -- err, enthusiasm.

Schneiderhan's recording of the Frank Martin violin concerto with Ansermet conducting. Still my favourite recording of the work, despite the mono sound.

"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

Mahler

Symphony No. 9

Ray,

This is a wonderful Mahler set by Tennstedt.  I played perhaps the first 2 CD's a few months ago and need to find time to listen to the rest ...

In what ways is the set wonderful?

Prokofiev: Sarcasms, Piano Sonatas Nos. 5 and 6 (Anne-Marie McDermott) - The first disc (recorded in 1997) of a 3-CD re-release of the complete sonatas, and I don't have another set with which to compare.  So far, liking this very much--perhaps a more expressive approach to the composer.  Now listening to No. 6, which Pogorelich did so well.  Might prefer his version, but this is nothing to sneeze at.

Do you like these sonatas?  Listening to them, I realize that I really don't have many versions of them at all--and should.

I do like them. Richter plays them marvelously, as does Pogorelich, as you noted. I also like Pollini's recording of the seventh? sonata. Beyond that, I don't have much. I like the concertos more and went a bit crazy last year getting different interpretations of those.

First listen!

A mini-Prokofiev fest!  :D

Of course I have Pollini's 7th--forgot about that one--but don't think I have any of Richter's versions of any of them.  Hm...

From this boz CD 23.

The recording is from 1976, and quite good. that said I never warmed to the somewhat loud singing of this group. Although I realize that they have been very important in bringing this kind of music on the musical map, it is not what I like to hear. I simply miss the detail, and shadings in the voices. Instead its one massive sound world, which gives to a certain extent pleasure, but tires quickly alas. All the voices are in itself excellent no quibbles there. I admire them all individually.
The music is beautiful.

The new erato

Splendid disc, essential music. Everybody touting stuff like Braga Santos, Arnell, Bate, Brian et al, ought to hear this. Now for the whole series BIS!
