I'm going to play 'stuck record player' and recommend Ancerl for a very different take on the Classical. (And it comes with the semi-legendary Baloghova recording of the Second Piano Concerto.)

You got here first (while I was tending to some chores), but I had the thought at about the same time!

The Symphonies of Carl Vine. Can someone please give me a good reason why I've never heard of this composer before a week ago?

Vine is far from being a household name, and maybe you don't read record review magazines from cover to cover.

Philoctetes

Argerich playing Beethoven's 2nd and 3rd Piano Concertos

I picked this disc up at Berkshire not too long ago and promptly forgot about it! It is Hahn's Bewildered Nightengale as perfomed (premiere recording) by Earl Wild at the age of 86. It is very gentle, melancholy, thoughtful type music, and reminds me at times of Faure and Debussy. I thought it might be an ideal disc to close the day and what a great choice.

That looks to be a wonderful recording - both works are favorites of mine, and the Borodin would seem to be perfect in this repertory.  I've heard of, but don't think I've heard, the soloists - but would expect they are more than capable.

These recordings are very good.  I don't know how they compare to others, but I have no complaints.  :)

Now:

Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 2

Muti
Philharmonia Orchestra

Very underrated in my opinion.  I have heard only #5, but it is one of the better ones in my opinion (and this is a work I know several). The price is certainly right!

Vine, as I found out talking with GMG member, Sid, is very popular in Australia, but isn't well-known on the outside for reasons that are beyond my comprehension. I personally think he's a fine composer and he's so versatile. His symphonies are fine, but I would recommend buying the recording on ABC Classics (w/ Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra) performing works like his Oboe Concerto and The Tempest. These compositions are especially noteworthy.

Last week, I went through a big Vine phase and his music was all I listened to. He's very interesting and I love the textures he uses in his music. Very atmospheric.

Listening to Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra. This is a great set and acts as a companion to Thomson's RVW symphony cycle also on Chandos.
