Now playing this SACD, which arrived late last week from across the pond for a first listen ...

Honestly, sometimes it sounds like the orchestra is sight-reading some of those obscure middle symphonies.

Which may very well have been the case. Probably sight-read the early symphonies, too, but got away with it more easily.

Given the performance conditions during Haydn's time, perhaps that is HIP.   :P

As good as his symphonies?

Based on my first listen, the performances of BWV 1055 and 1056 were interesting and perhaps even somewhat elegant.  But they are no match for the performances of these works by the English Concert under Trevor Pinnock ...

Better. A late work and, by Pfitzner's standards, a light work (he referred to it as a suite). It dances  8)

I'm not too impressed with Pfitzner's music. I own the cpo box and have been pretty disappointed.

Ravel - Miroirs. Pascal Rogé.

They're all awesome but Une barque sur l'océan has always been my favourite from the set. I also love the sublimely orchestrated version, which I knew first, but these days I return more often to the piano original. It is wonderfully evocative and stirs me up something awful. I love it.

I seem to recall that Decca's tubby piano sound ruined the enjoyment of that set for me.

Tubby?  ???

Perhaps you're an audiophile? As for me, I don't really notice such things unless the sound is really obviously clipped or overly reverberant. This recording seems ok, and very happy with the performance, but I don't have much to compare it to.

Who is your preference?

Someone needs to write a dictionary of all the terms that reviewers use to describe recorded sound. I have often wondered what people mean by the tern tubby.

EDIT - The Free Dictionary says this about Tubby - "2. Having a dull sound; lacking resonance."

That would be most good, most good.  :D

Now:

Listening to Webern's Im Sommerwind. Beautifully conducted by Sinopoli and played by the Dresden Staatskapelle.

Are you quoting Winona Ryder playing an Englishwoman on Family Guy?  :D

tubby: Having an exaggerated deep-bass range.

Ahhhh. OK.

That may be the case then. I don't have any high end kit so perhaps it isn't as noticeable to me as to people with quality systems.
