Stuart - I'll put it on my Netflix rental list - have rarely WATCHED classical music performances, so will be a new experience for me - thanks for the suggestion!  Dave  :)

Dave,  I am no movie buff but I surely have enjoyed watching classical music performances.  Without watching Karajan in concert, I would never have realized how much he completely mastered the podium and that aura he projected to both the audience and the orchestra ...

Now playing CD3 -  Symphony No. 3 and Leonore Overture from this set for a first listen.  I actually have this 1977 cycle on beautifully put together LP set ...

Here is a picture of the BPO from that exquisite libretto (by today standard) that came with the LP set ...

Yes, that is the one.  Bill (aka Bogey) poked fun at my ownership of classical music performance on DVD ....

Do not recall that, Stuart.  Can you find the quote or remember the context? 8)
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Good evening Bill.  That was many moons ago when we last had a discussion on classical music DVD.  I actually have not added any new titles to my collection in a while ...

Go for it, Bill and you will enjoy the experience.  You have to see Karajan on the podium to see what a commanding presence he had.  It was also very interesting to see how intense Harnoncourt was on the podium while Karl Richter was totally relaxed ...

I prefer Gergiev's reading of the 6th with the Kirov Orchestra to his Vienna performance. Have you heard this recording?

Now listening:

This is my second go around with this performance and it is excellent.

Oh okay, well you should checkout this recording of the 6th. It will knock your socks off. The performance of Romeo & Juliet Overture is also very well done.

Now listening:

Listening to Symphony No. 13 "Babi Yar" right now. I haven't listened to this symphony in a year or so. Hauntingly beautiful.

BUSONI Piano Concerto  op. 39
Marc-André Hamelin,     City of Birmingham S.O. (+ male chorus)
Mark Elder, cond.
Hamelin may have been a bit more closely miked than Ogdon, doesn't seem to be banging as much. I'll get to the Garrick Ohlsson/Cleveland/Dohnanyi version soon and compare.

pulled out to refresh my memory when  Lecuona's name was mentioned
Manuel de FALLA  Cuatro piezas españolas, Nocturno
SOLER Fandango
TURINA  Danzas Fantasticas  (mistakenly ascribed to Rodrigo in the notes)
LECUONA Andalucia Suite  (source for 'The Breeze and I' and Malagueña)

Yes shes a fine Violinist for sure :) - I have a mini-collection of some of the great Violin Concertos with her performing and enjoy the playing in them a lot! 0:).

I'm in love with her too  ;)  In fact she decorates one wall of my music library:

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
