Apparently it's a great disc. Some days ago I read an interesting interview of Viviana Sofronitsky (fortepianist and wife of the fortepiano builder Paul McNulty) and she expressed exactly the same opinion... But probably your opinion is more objective because she is a friend of Istomin and even recorded a disc with him (Mendelssohn's output for cello).  :)

Yes, his Mahler is quite good. He did a smoking performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 that I'm still quite fond of.

Oh no, when I went on a Shostakovich binge late last year, this was one recording I had returned to quite often. Litton has recorded Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 8, & 10. All are great performances.

Hmm... something is missing!

On a side note, if you stipulate one symphony per conductor/orchestra, this is by far the best [or most to my taste] cycle which can be assembled out of the recordings in my collection. The listening has been consistently outstanding. My only regrets are that I wasn't able to include Vanska, Abbado/Rome, Gardiner, Szell, or Karajan. Too many great recordings! Oh, and my Op 125 pick is not from that quintet either.  8)  Hint: It's in Sergeant Rock's top three!

Last night listened to:

Zemlinsky: The Mermaid (Symphonic Fantasy); Sinfonietta
New Zealand SO/Judd
(Naxos)

I got this a while back & have listened to the Sinfonietta quite often, which I have found I liked more than The Mermaid. I like the former because it is quite a modernistic work, with some of the rhythms of composers like Stravinsky. The middle slow movement has an all pervading sense of tragedy, a bit like the slow movements of Mahler's late symphonies. Only just over 20 minutes long, Zemlinsky crammed a lot into that relatively short space of time. The Mermaid sounds similar to film music (though it was written in 1903) & has this phrase in the middle movement that reminds me of the main theme of Tchaikovsky's 5th. At more than 40 minutes, this is a pretty long work. I like how Zemlinsky captures the feel of the mermaid's underwater world in the opening bars. Some very good orchestration here, in both works. I saw a recording of his Lyric Symphony, and I'll try to buy it today. I am a bit daunted by that work, as the last time I heard it it sounded a bit dark, but I want to own it so I can subject it to repeated listening. I also want to get the EMI double budget Gemini set of his choral and vocal works. If anyone has heard this set, please PM me, I would like to know a bit more about it, thanks...

I hadn't listened to this set in a long time...



... but I just needed to wait until the fugue in C major to recall the reason: Hantaï can be a sensible, even a great harpsichordist (his two Goldbergs, f.i.), but IMO he has real problems to manage the virtuosism... What sense have those insane speeds, Pierre?  >:(
