Now playing this Christmas CD from my classical collection ...

PaulR

Arpeggione Sonata.
I like Barker's playing, recording quality is mostly good, but a couple of times, the bass is really boomy, not well balanced.  But that may be just the nature of the instrument, and not of the recording itself.  Besides that issue, it's very well done.  Though, a little slow to my taste.

I'm no hard core Tchaikovsky fan, but I do like his music, including The Nutcracker--the whole thing!  In fact, I think I'll go it right now!

That's one of my favorite Nutcracker recordings. I own that edition as well. Sonically, it sounds great too.

Now:

Wonderful recording so far.

I don't really want to play this but I was asked if I had any Christmas music, and I'd rather this than carols any day.

I think tonight I will hear some seasonal music, this morning it has been Haydn:

[CD 2: Sonatas No.10 in C major, Hob.XVI:1; No.11 in B flat major, Hob.XVI:2; No.12 in A major, Hob.XVI:12; No.13 in G major, Hob.XVI:6; No.14 in C major, Hob.XVI:3 & No.15 in E major, Hob.XVI:13]

It's amazing the variety of resources of Haydn in these relatively early sonatas. All of them superbly played by Ronald Brautigam who does everything well to bring this music to life.

For the morning:

Dvorak, Antonin - Early Works String Quartet w/ the Zemlinksy Quartet - 4 discs which include the first 7 SQs and other pieces - recommendation by Brian - young but polished group w/ modern sound (2006 recordings) - picked this up for $10 on the Amazon MP (Newbury Comics) - no longer listed there at that price, so may have been an error? OK w/ me -  :D

Very nice, erato!
Oh yes it is! And very appropriate for the season as well!

Edit: The dance tunes must become so annoying during repeated listenings. I haven't heard this piece in ages and I still found the Chinese dance hard to stomach...

Actually, the Chinese Dance is my favorite dance of The Nutcracker, followed closely by the Arabian Dance.

The Suites do have most of the 'Greatest Hits' of the Nutcracker, but not enough of them.   The full ballet is recommended, and even more so for Swan Lake.  If I had just the suite for the Nutcracker, I would miss out on my favorite piece of it, the Scene 1:  Christmas Tree.

My faves, too!  We heard the whole thing yesterday while matting prints for Anne's upcoming show.  Maybe the Bottecelli Trittico is next, after ASQ finishes 59/3!
