Hi Stuart - please let us know what you think of this HM set?  I have the Brilliant 4-CD box inserted above and enjoy - Dave  :D

Hi, Sonic. I don't know if you have noticed this re-release:

$20.82 for the complete 4-CD set on Amazon... One of the best recordings from Musica Antiqua Köln. Highly recommended is not to say enough.  :)

Dave,  I have given Brian my initial impression of CD1 in an earlier post and this is my third version of these works on CD.  BTW, is your BC version by Musica Amphion/Belder?

Antonie - you Devil;) ;D   One of my favorite groups! Immediately put in an order to the Amazon US MP - just $14 + S/H - I know that this will be GREAT!  Must compare w/ my other recording box - thanks for bringing this to my attention - Dave  :)

My set has a different CD cover.

Al fresco is a budgety re-release series from Archiv.  No full track listings, and liner notes must be downloaded from the DG website.

Harry

On the last day of this year, I decided to play the last disc in this box, CD V.

Anner Bijlsma plays Boccherini String Quintets, opus 29,  No. 5 & 6.  Three sonatas for Cello solo and BC in C major, A major & C major again.

Sigiswald Kuijken, Alda Stuurop, Violins.
Lucy van Dael, Viola. Wieland Kuijken, Cello.
Hopkinson Smith, Guitar.

Well performed and recorded, a box well worth your money.

PETER PHILIPS:      Paradisus Sacris Cantionibus       / Ensemble Currende, Erik van Nevel

A very beautiful music. Philips, catholic, was forced to leave England and live in exile. His motets show the strong influence of Italian masters even if they appear much more conservative than Monteverdi. A superb interpretation.

Harry

From this fine box, that came highly recommended, the last CD, with the following concertos.

L'estro Armonico, No. 7/8/9/10/11/12.

Biondi plays on a Desiderio Quercetani 1997, after Ferdinando Gagliano 1732, and its a wonderful instrument, with a velvety sound, which is capable of producing a very open sound. This is one of the best Vivaldi sets I bought this year.

Great, Dave! I also love MAK in this repertoire.

The Tafelmusik is one of my favorite Baroque compositions and I probably have too much versions, but this one and Hünteler are my favorites.

BTW, recently I also found this re-release of this 2-CD set by MAK:

Unfortunately, it seems available just in Europe at the moment.

Thanks. I'll keep in mind that ECM Dutilleux disc. Not sure yet if I really do want to get better acquainted with Dukas.

Yep. http://www.weta.org/fmblog/?p=208
QuoteArchiv Produktion, the early-music label of Deutsche Grammophon (one of the first and perhaps the first such singularly devoted sub-label), contains countless treasures in its, err, archives of sixty years. Some of the great Archiv-recordings have already been re-issued as part of the DG-Originals series, but as far as I know Archiv itself has only had one series of re-issues so far, the short-lived "Archiv Blue" line.

Incidentally, it looks like Al Fresco is just as short lived.

Thread duty:

Peter Gabriel (*1950)
Scratch My Back
Virgin

3 times in a row. But now onto Bach at last.

Gabriel says about the album: ...I explored a few different ideas for arrangements using only home made instruments, choral groups etc. but in the meantime was introduced to a wonderful arranger, John Metcalfe, who was doing some great work with Real World. I really liked his scores which seemed original, soulful and fresh. When we met, I felt we also had enough of an overlap of taste around such composers as Steve Reich, Arvo Part, Stravinsky etc. I asked John to keep the arrangements simple, stark but always emotional, so the songs could be really heard and felt..

Now listening to clips from Goebel/MAK's Telemann Tafelmusik.

Chick Corea & Béla Fleck, The Enchantment

Here I've entered one outlying precinct of The Twilight Zone, I think . . . I haven't listened to either album in some little while, was whimsically inspired to take both discs (which were not stored together) home for listening, and here I've just listened to the two albums in succession . . . and I find that I ordered them the same day, three years ago.

Love that Christie recording, and have the Perotin ordered and in the mail - might arrive soon!  Dave  :D

Cambini, Giuseppe (1746-1825) - Flute Trios w/ Nicola Guidetti on the flute (sounds like a modern one) along w/ violin & viola - as usual Tactus does a superb effort at recording these works - excellent flute compositions for those who like this type of music -  :)

Beethoven, LV - Violin Concerto & Romances w/ Thomas Zehetmair & Frans Bruggen - this disc has been lauded in recent posts as a favorite recording of the concerto by many - well, I must agree - don't believe that I own any other recordings by this violinist - ALSO, there are no liner notes (just a fold out booklet w/ ads!) - if anyone knows a site w/ some more information, PDF file, or other, please let me know -  :-\

Forgot this one earlier. Outstanding recording, uplifting and relaxing at the same time.

Boy, what a good recording. Warmth, depth, lyrical beauty, like looking out over an expansive vista of clear skies. The adagio is 25 minutes long and feels perfect. And, thank heavens, Sanderling agrees with me that the adagio requires no percussion whatsoever to be at its best. Bliss!
